I will be going there in the very near future and would like some insight and opinions. Will I need to update my passport since I would be crossing the Canadian border yet on the way to a US state?

Always wanted to take one of those cruises, they look great. I had a 'lay-over' (sp) in Anchorage in '98 and fell in love with Alaska, the Halibut was amazing. I am piecing together the puzzle and will hopefully be there in July yet I do not have a set time or date.

I need a change so I am hoping to relocate and Juneau PD has 5 open positions. Fingers crossed and nothing lost when a honest attempt is made.

Technically you only need a birth certificate and drivers license to enter Canada. Its the U.S, that requires a valid passport. But Canadian border agents are accustomed to seeing passports now and many believe its required for Canada now. You'll likely get hauled into customs without a passport and thoroughly checked over. Valid passport is strongly advised, but not required. To get back into the U.S, even a U.S. citizen needs a valid passport or one of the approved travel document, ie. enhanced drivers license or Nexus card. Passport saves hassles crossing either direction.

If you have any criminal convictions even a DUI, you'll be denied entry to Canada. You'll need a waiver before you go! Not sure how to apply for a waiver, non of my American friends and relatives have needed one.

Save another big hassle and leave all guns behind. Saying you are going to Alaska, I can almost guarantee you'll be searched.

    Bull****.

Post when you're there. You've conned this forum too long for this to be believable at all.

You're not leaving your mom's house until you're sober and have a job.

I'd honestly love to see both; just stopped holding my breath.

Here's my two cents. Don't drive.

A 7000 mile round trip from Houston is going to cost you the same in gasoline as a round trip plane ticket. Not to mention hotels, meals, depreciation and other expenses.

Just fly in, rent a car, and find a place to stay.

Unless, of course, the journey is your destination.

I love Juneau... one of my favorite places. Just FYI, you CAN'T DRIVE there-- there are no roads which will get you to Juneau. Your only choice is by boat or plane.

It does rain there, though! And I'm coming from Portland, which is already pretty rainy...

    Chris,
    Thank you for your support.

While doing some research I did find out that Juneau is only accessible via boat or plane but thanks for the reminder. I will not be driving so one less hurdle.

If you're making the trip by car, you can drive to Skagway and then take the ferry (stops at Haines and then on to Juneau).

    Even so, this:
    And furthermore, this:
Gregg, it seems as though each week you're posting about a different car, career, project, or adventure that you're about to embark upon, and yet none of these ever come to fruition. My advice to you is to focus on something, make it happen, and then (and only then) post here and tell us all about what you've accomplished.

Burned that in one of your drunken tirades against me. Not going to get sucked in again in terms of committing energy for you. You may not reminder the old PMs but I do.

Last public thing was an accusation off tea bagging for friends here.

    Chris,
If you want to continue with your non-constructive and OT tirade please feel free to PM me. I would like to keep this topic on topic and maybe you have some insight regarding Juneau, AK?

It's a long way to go for an interview...

Not a real happy place, from what I understand, so may not work with any present "issues" you may be working through.

Not real close to Houston, how will you take care of your mother while that far away?

I have to echo what Wayne and others have said, probably best to focus on more immediately attainable goals, close to home, then move forward with your life one step at a time...

A skype interview seems much more practical than driving 7,000 miles for a job interview..

Suggesting you get sober, get a job, and move out is on topic and is constructive. I have no intention of keeping that to a PM when your next big project posts are public. Do just one of them and I'll be all encouraging.

You set up that donation site you wanted me to look at and donate to yet?

Are you sober yet? That's a huge demon and a huge struggle. Plenty of encouragement on this forum.

I guess you could do that, if you were really determined. You'd be much faster, and probably cheaper to either fly from Seattle, or take the Alaska State Ferry, again from Seattle.

I really like Juneau. I was up there last year for work, and took a few photos. If you don't mind the clouds and rain, it's one of the most beautiful places in the world (IMO), and has decent skiing, along with some incredible hiking, biking, and boating opportunities.

But... there is that rain thing. The guys I met with said "Hey, you were here on our one sunny day for the year!"

There's at least two sunny days- I was on a cruise ship that pulled up one day (it was sunny), and left the next day (it was sunny) :D

    Cute little town.

I think they actually had an unusually nice year.

Great seafood there, too, if you're into that.

Oh yeah! Love Alaskan King Salmon. We went fishing and caught some then took a float plane over the glacier to some log cabin in the middle of nowhere and had some BBQ.

Went mountain biking too- beautiful. It was a nice sunny week in the inside passage...

So you're ditching your "bestie" in Africa and deserting your cancer stricken friend and moving out of your mom's house?

Good work! I know all three of them will be proud of you.
