In the process of thinking what I wanted to do in life, I came across this idea. It is a known fact that everyone has a god given gift, something in which they excel above the rest of the pack. Now, what if everyone in this world knew that gift and pursued a career in that field. Would we have a much greater number of billionaires and millionaires in the world?? Or perhaps even cut world poverty greatly??

Just got me thinkin, figured I would put the question out there....

No. Society would be enriched, but there wouldn't be anymore money out there. The payment for skills is based on supply and demand.

Example - Right now, you would pay extra for a carpenter that is superior to the others. Well, if all carpenters have a god-given gift for it, then they'd all produce about the same quality of workmanship and you'd just go with the cheapest one.

Remember, in 'The Jerk', when Steve Martin finally found out what his 'special purpose' was....?

So, I think your asking... how much efficiency are we losing b/c people are not pursuing their "gifts"?

Well first of all, I don't personally agree that everyone has this "gift".

And its just not possible for everyone to pursue these gifts. If a poor black child has a gift in golf, he is very unlikely to find out, unfortunately.

It's a very complex system, there are losses along the way. Pursuing your gift 100% is next to impossible with all the extra BS these days. Even if you find your gift and master your gift, you still have to make sure someone pays you for it.

We may all have a gift of some sort, but I don't think it always translates into career aspects. But anyway, to follow your point, when people follow their passions, money becomes a secondary concern. Part of the reason we're such a money-driven society is because we spend so much of our lives doing crap we hate that the only tangible benefit for doing it is money. So, I don't think such a scenario would result in great financial wealth. However, it would result in a healthier society. There would be a lot less stress and a steep decline in the number of peope $hitting on each other.
