I'm sitting in the bidder's seating at Barrett-Jackson right this moment. Have seen some crazy stuff today. Watching a Lambo go across right now. Wireless networks are very cool.

A few Texans here, Texas Driver mag is on hand, as are some F-Chatters.

Not much Ferrari action to report. A 355 Spider and a converted Daytona went across today, brought reasonable #'s. Check out www.barrett-jackson.com and there's a link to Auction Results.

    LS6 Chevelle Convertible goes for $300,000. Sold my white/red interior '70 LS6 for $25k in 1995. Big regrets, but probably wouldn't have the 355 if I didn't.

Entertaining to watch, but I doubt there will be many buyers that walk out of there thinking they got a good deal. The exception might be some of the European cars that the muscle car buying Americans don't know their value. I can tell you it is absurd what some of those muscle cars and customs are selling for.

Also, how about the guy wearing Ferrari stuff buying up cars for a new museum in Colorado? He is crazy, but fun to watch, it might as well be a competition scoring points. If he was representing my museum, I'm not sure I would be totally crazy about his behavior. Noticed the Peterson museum guys were very laid back.

The Barrett-Jackson auction has become a total spectacle. It is indeed amazing some of the prices some things bring, and even some of the lower prices paid, still too much if a person were to look on their own. But guys, feel it, the good prices that quality muscle cars and hot rods bring is here to stay, it is not a fad.

Don't any of you guys sleep?

I agree with Matt, the musclecar prices are not flukes. They've been coming up pretty consistently since the 80s, and clean examples are very hard to find these days.

This reminds us a lot of miniature horse auctions. At times sale lots go for pretty close to market (muscle cars). At other times things degenerate into feeding frenzies/ego contests - which can be entertaining if you remember to "sit on your hands" and don't get caught up in it to the detriment of your check book.

    Don't worry, I didn't accidentally buy anything.

As for the European stuff not bringing crazy money? Well, depends on the time of day, I think. Things start to wind down after prime-time. Saw a not-special-in-any-way Lambo go last night, and it brought about $10-20k more than market. There was a Mercedes 560SL that brought about $15k over market as well. But the one that really made me question the sanity of the high bidder was the Ford GT that brought $300k before the 8% buyer's premium!

Congratulations to A-M Dallas, who succesfully sold the AR-1 for all the money! Think they sold a car to the losing bidder as well!

It is indeed a circus, and a great place to sell, especially muscle cars and hot rods.

And all this on the company dime! (I really am working, I promise.)

Muscle car prices have consistently gone up since the early 80's, but so did Ferrari prices for several decades before the BIG run-up late eighties. We all know what happens when it rises too fast. Many similarities now between the muscle car market and the Ferrari market in 1991. People see a few cars getting those prices on the auction market and you end up with a dozen others trying to sell at that price, but not moving. Market value is what you can get on any given day, a Barett-Jackson day is not that day.

Most exotic-car-only collectors scratch their heads at the muscle car, hot rod prices. The think is, "But why would they be valuable, they are not rare, they made hundreds of thousands of those things!" Exactly. With so many having been produced, it had an affect of advertising to the masses in a sense. Far more so than any exotic. So, all those people grew up, still lusted after that car they wanted when younger, and so they buy 'em now, also making a connection to their past youth. There is a lot of heart and passion in that scene, more so than I think you'll find than exotic cars. After all, these were cars driven everyday, people were around them constantly. It is a connection with the past, and something people are willing to pay for today, and tomorrow.

    Great point.

My mother is the most sensible, down to earth person I know. Her first car was a 67 Mustang, that she bought used. She's driven minivans for about the last 15 years. She's a typical "cars are for transportation and utility" person. I asked her what she thought about the new 05 Mustangs, and her eyes lit up like I have NEVER seen when discussing a car. I can tell she's struck by how much it looks like her first car. She'll probably buy one in a year or two, I'm betting.

Something to be said for the power of nostalgia.

Well, I watched much of it and thought it was ridiculous. Of course, it would have been fun to watch with Jim M. (will you hire me to carry your suitcaes on these trips?) The bid prices, the bidders' conduct and the "advice" given by paid sponsors about how to start a car collection. I think I know a thing or two about muscle car values were ridiculous. The winning bids on most of the muscle cars were too high. And that does not include the 8% the seller paid and the 8% the buyer paid to BJ. So they paid 16% on top of what was already an inflated price. Only a rich, uninformed moran would do that. Barry Maguire (sp?) said yesterday: "This is what our car hobby is all about." Wrong. Maybe multi-millionaires who want to have pissing contests over how much money they can blow in a period of seconds on national TV. But not 95% of the car enthusiats out there. These moronic selling prices just serve to eliminate more and more people from the car hobby. When Robbie, Ron & I attend local cars shows, I can tell you that no one there (including us) has anything in common with those white haired, sunglass wearing BJ bidders. Over & out. Starsky
