Yep, A guy had a van and was homeless. I offered him some money for a bus ticket back to his hometown and he only asked for $200. I had a cop come out to run the tags to make sure it wasn't stolen and it checked out to be fine and aquired a 2002 Econoline Ford 15 passenger van for only $200 bucks. The van runs pretty good but it has some primer spots on the drivers side and the inside needs cleaning a bit. Overall pretty much the best deal I have ever had in a long time.

Are you sure you said $200.00 and not $20,000.00 ?

You got a title with it? I guess I know why he was homeless - he apparently had no sense of reality or money - heck, any dealer in the world would have given him 10 times that in a heartbeat and feel like they stole it.

I don't think I could rip someone off that badly in good conscience.

    Good for you!
You were presented with the rare opportunity to render help to someone less fortunate than yourself.
You were given the chance to make a difference in his life.
You had the chance to shine, and show humanity just what kind of a man you are.

    I guess we now know.

Hey, as long as you weren't the cause of the guys misfortune then WTF. I'm sure you didn't point a gun to the guys head. If it wasn't you it would have been someone else. It's better to keep quiet about it though ;)

So instead of accepting some gas money to get back home, he accepted a bus ticket in exchange for his van? What a bonehead. Good score! I hope you have a title, Bill of Sale.. something?

You're POSITIVE it was his van to sell? Was it titled to him? I would think this guy would realize the value of it and at least try for something near fair-value. Let us know if/when trouble brews.

That's not necessarily true. A lot of homeless people are homeless because they suffer from mental illnesses. Illness that effect a persons ability to reason. I have experienced Lewy Body disease first hand in my grandfather. You could have taken everything he owned for a pack of cigarettes and he would have been happier than a pig in **** about it. Talking to him, he would seem perfectly normal, except for his inability to make good decisions. If you didn't know him, you probably would have thought he was just some old bonehead. And some people might of given him that pack of cigarrettes. I'm just happy that he had family around to prevent that from happening.

I'm not passing judgment, or trying to start an arguement. Maybe there was more to the story that bruce wasn't privy too. A part of the story that might have made this deal seem more like stealing candy from a child. But, maybe not.

So now he's homeless, and vanless, but, at least he got a bus ride home.

I too would be proud of separating a homeless guy from his last valuable possesion.

Maybe you'll get lucky, or, maybe he'll wake up the day after tomorrow and wonder where his van is and report it stolen. Maybe it already was, just hadn't hit the hot sheet yet.

MAybe this whole story is a bunch of B.S. Which is my hope.

Sad commentary on the state of the world that you are bragging here about ripping a person of diminished means or capacity off.

    Proud day indeed for you.

I've sobered up this afternoon, and I've decided that I want my van back. Your $200 Nigerian travelers checked bounced at the bank. Can somebody give me a ride back to my van? I'm stranded at a bus station in Twisterville, Kansas.

On the basis that all of this is legit, i.e.: The guy is the actul owner and would actually sell the van for $200, your better deal in life would have been to give him the $200 and walk. Better yet, drive the guy to a place that would loan him a couple of grand on the van on the spot. Unless in a position where somebody was on their knees begging to buy the van for $200, I could never do such a thing. You should donate the van to a local charity. At least you could get a write-off for around $6 or $8K and feel good about yourself!

I bought him a free supper and also let him stay at my hotel for the night since it's been raining here for the past 3-4 days and its been cold outside. I figured up how much the ticket was for the bus and actually drove him to the Bus Station. I got the title right here and once I get back from the Eurofestival with some of the F-chatters on here I am debating on getting tags for it here or giving it to my mom as a Christmas persent so she can trade it in once I fix it up to get a newer car model.

Edit : I also consistly asked if this is 100% what he wanted to do. I gave him the room so he could think it over that night even offered him gas money to get him where he wanted to go but he refused to here what I had to say.

Soooo, if this guy was to turn around a few days later and say to the Police - "He forced me to sell it to him. He said he'd <hurt, kill, whatever> me."

The Police investigate and find a vehicle worth X thousand sold for 200, and an elaborate plot to conceal the truth by a post or 2 on ferrarichat....

    What happens then?

PS. A good "deal" but a bad decision to go ahead with it IMHO.

Sounds like you got ripped off for $200. You couldn't give me a F**d. My suggestion is to siphon out any fuel remaining in the gas tank and see what you can get for it...

    Wow. That's some rationalization.

Let’s take a good look at this:
And instead of actually helping him (like telling him his van is worth more than a bus ticket) you decided to take advantage of the situation.
True, for the worse. Where he once had a 15-20k van, he now has a bus ticket. You're a saint.
And you failed miserably. If you were a true caring, giving human being you would have offered him a great deal more for the van or 1)Taken him to someplace and helped him negotiate a proper sale price with someone else 2) Given him a job for a couple of days to get the gas and food money so he could drive himself home and still have his VAN!

Instead you took advantage of a guy down on his luck for your own profit. I'm sure your parents would be proud of you. If I did something like this and crowed like you, mine would probably disown me.

We certainly know what kind of men both of you are.
