I bought it for the mileage (diesel...36/48) for my company car (black of course), but I really like this car. For a 100 hp engine, it has tons of torque (I thought it would be a dog), lots of leg and head room (I'm 6'0), and the wagon allows me to haul goods as well. Only 1000 miles on it so far but as of now, I highly recommend them. FWIW. Jerry.

Congrats. 100 hp engine? I know its a diseal, so given that what does you butt dyno say it feels like?

Would you say like a 150/200 hp natural aspirated gasoline motor? More/less?

Is this the outgoing model ? I just read in Road & Track about the new model, wasn't sure if that wagon is out yet.

The Jetta Wagon is still based on the previous generation Jetta. Not sure when the new one will come out. I like the look of Jerrari's new wagon and you can't go wrong with black. I really like VW's TDI engine too. I have seen quite a few TDI badges lately so it looks like the public is getting used to driving diesels again.

My butt tells me 150 hp or so. It will lay rubber easily, very fun to drive. I bought a 5 speed to get the better mileage. The previous years (up until '03) had issues w/ premature timing belt failure, but apparently those problems have been ironed out. I like the looks (as far as a wagon goes that is) and fit and finish is excellent.

Thanks for the info. Looks great. I saw the new audi wagon, that looked great too, thus I thought maybe the VW Jetta wagon was out.

    Have fun! :)

You might get better gas mileage than that. A coworker bought a 97 Jetta TDI, and he got 52 mpg, and in the forties around town.

They don't feel like dogs because of the tq. 177lb-ft of tq @ 1,800rpms. Nice low-end grunt.

I love diesels and wish we had more options here in the states.

Very nice choice! I was actually shopping for a used TDi very recently, but found it difficult to track many down. The TDi engine is actually very tunable from what I've discovered & there are tons of tuning parts out there for them. The good part is that fuel economy really doesn't seem to be affected much at all and sometimes improved. IF you're interested here's a good forum to check out specific to TDi VW's: http://www.tdiclub.com/

I was thinking about this, but it would be kind of cool if they threw a diesel into the 300c. Though not as popular I wouldnt think, it would be neat. There arent alot of options for diesel cars or wagons. VW has the most diesel options I think. Smart has a diesel out but thats cramped and mostly a round town tourer type deal.

Good luck finding a used one. Plus, you definitely don't want a pre '03 as they had troubles. I found a used '03 w/ 30,000 miles in Chicago and they would not budge from $18,000. I got mine new ('05) for $21,500. A no-brainer.
