I purchased a 1988 911 last year and have been enjoying the overall ownership experience while doing a partial refresh of the car. This week I had the opportunity to purchase a 1989.5 964 C4 Coupe that has been sitting for 10 years. It needs an engine rebuild as well as addressing any electrical/mechanical issues while sitting. I’m guessing it will be about $30k for the engine rebuild itself. There will be “while I am in there” items too. Does this sound about right? So hard to find these cars right now that I just took the plunge.

Thanks Chris. I’m excited to get this running so that I can compared it against the 911.

Congrats. I have a ‘93 C2, which has become one of my favorite cars. I like all 911s, but IMO the 964 is the perfect blend of classic and modern-ish.

I’ll look forward to your updates. I haven’t done a rebuild, but if you’re doing it I think you’re addressing the usual oil leak weaknesses of the early 964s so should have a really solid car.

While you have it apart you may want to check out the flywheel also. Early 964’s had the Freudenberg flywheel which had issues and was replaced with the Luk flywheel which is the recommended replacement.

This. Also the fuel lines, oil tank hoses and spring plate bushings are relatively easy and inexpensive to do while the engine is out. Elephant Racing makes some well-regarded bushings that I had installed on my car’s spring plates.

I don’t think 964 fuel lines are prone to fail, but after 30 years I wasn’t going to roll the dice.

These are all great suggestions. In addition to the engine rebuild, I plan on updating whatever I can. From my conversation with the shop, it will be at least 6 months to get the rebuild complete. I guess they are really backed up. While I wait, I will probably address suspension, brakes, and all hoses/lines as suggested. Probably will change clutch and exhaust while I'm at it. Should be a fun project. What I love about Porsche is that parts are easily obtainable and labor is much more reasonable.

I get my 964 serviced at Porsche Palm Springs where they have an excellent Classic tech. But they are usually backed up and expensive. If you want contact info let me know, but if you have a good independent that might be fine.

And yes, parts are usually not a problem.

Definitely- hard to find one that’s not black, red, or white. Nice find.

Ugh, that's what I am expecting. Not looking at this as an investment, more of a project and a fun car to have afterwards. However, I need to have limits ;)

Thanks but the car is not drive-able so I will have it done here in the South Bay. I have a house in Rancho Mirage and it would have been a fun drive down.

I bought one in 2012, a 1989 C4. Paid $10.5K for it. Engine had three broken head studs, leaked like crazy, and the valve guides were worn. After rebuild, it ran well but felt way too heavy compared to my long hood cars. One morning, I tried to start the car unsuccesfully, went out to run an errand, and when I returned, the car was on fire in my basement garage. I assume the fuel in the intake manifold caught fire. I question why anyone would buy one of those when even a base 987 Cayman is a far better car.

Sounds like a neglected car. I treat mine like my Ferraris — preventative maintenance. No issues.

The long hood 911s are far lighter, but more vintage in performance, comfort and safety.
