The Cayman S is SUCH a sweet car. It had very respectable power, felt so incredibly solid and stable, and stock it sounded ALMOST as good as my RUF Boxster (almost); which is saying a lot, because RUF hit a home run on the 3600S exhaust note. And the Cayman looks gorgeous in Guards Red. They have a white one coming I can't wait to see, too.

I also went by the RUF dealership in town to get my car tech inspected for an upcoming DE (thanks guys!). They had a new 3.8L X51 conversion for the BoxsterS. WOWOWOWOWOWOW! That car is a bloody rocket! Close to 400 HP (with the RUF tuning that goes with it) and that car felt within a gnat's arse of my old 996TT in acceleration. Dang that car hauls butt. Hey! But my car still SOUNDS better!!! lol

PORSCHE!!! HELLO?!?!?!? BUILD THE PROPER 987/CAYMAN AND THEY WILL COME!!! ARE YOU LISTENING, YOU CLOSE-MINDED, 911-WORSHIPPING WEENIES?!?!? lol

I did a back to back Cayman S vs. 997 Carrera S Cab last weekend and 2 things stood out, the power difference and the lightness the 997 had over the Cayman. Both very tossable, but I thought the opposite would be true, the Cayman felt not as light on its feet. The power is pretty good in the Cayman, but its the punch in your back that the Carrera has on it. I'd be happy with either one though. Both suspensions are perfect for daily driving and tracking. I'm very impressed at the improvements over the 996.

Adrift, I saw you on Midway headed to RUF yesterday (headed home from my shop, which is next to RUF). I got to experience the X51 Boxster as well, and it is, indeed, impressive.

Having compared the 997 to the Boxster, I would take the Boxster, but only with the RUF engine swap. The Boxster felt better balanced, and not as twitchy. With the extra power of the engine conversion, the better balance of the mid-engine, and the lighter weight, the Boxster (or Cayman for that matter) seems to me to be the better package.

To further complicate things, though, I got a ride in the R Kompressor (a.k.a. the Red Baron, 997 w/ RUF supercharger) and that is a very impressive package as well. The kompressor is transparent in its operation except for the extra performance, and given that the 997 is already an impressive package, the extra power is more than usable. And the Baron is for sale, if anyone is interested.

(Note: I don't work for RUF. I'm their neighbor, and also in the car biz. They are great guys, and have very cool products, and I am always happy to give them a recommendation.)
