This was posted today on a tax list that I belong to. Just FYI

    **********

Tired of residents of California registering the vehicles out of state but driving them in California?

Would you like to see them pay their fair share for vehicle registeration?

Would you like to do something to help get more revenue into the state coffers but you do not want to pay the added taxes?

    If so then read further.

Report Vehicles with Out-of-State License Plates to the CHP

Did you know that the State of California loses millions of dollars a year in revenue from California residents who unlawfully register their vehicles in other states or countries?

Did you know that vehicle registration fees are due immediately upon accepting employment or establishing residency in the State of California?

Did you know that California law permits only 20 days to complete the process of registering your vehicle without paying a penalty?

The three most common reasons for not completing the registration process are:

    1. People are unaware of California registration laws.
    2. People are evading payments of registration fees and taxes.
    3. People are unable to comply with air pollution control laws.

Please use this link to report vehicles you believe belong to California residents but are not properly registered.

    Include the following information:

    * State or province in which vehicle is registered
    * Vehicle license number
    * Time and date the vehicle was observed
    * Make, model and color of the vehicle
    * Location where the vehicle was observed
    * Any additional comments and descriptive information

You can enter this information into the CHP website and have them get the correct vehicle registeration paid. Their url for this reporting is:

    http://www.chp.ca.gov/html/cheaters.html

So help collect more taxes without you having to pay the taxes.

Unless of course you are one of them driving a vehicle in California but licensed out of state.

I'd heard they were trying to crack down on that. One of the reasons that a Boxer was kind of difficult.

Question: How can you charge sales tax on a used item?

Vincent- I always wondered how sales tax could be charged on a used car myself.

PS: if you do get a Boxer, where I live it only has to be smoged once (on transfer). Just FYI.

Just heard on the news CHP is getting proactive and cracking down on CA residents with their cars registered else where. What happens to the cars that can not legally be registered in CA, i.e. the euro conversions.

they need to be converted by a shop approved by the Bureau of automotive repair. it is a fairly expensive test 4 to 5 k if everything goes well, more if it doesn't. for the Boxer I was looking at it was going to be around 10k. Even if the car has been converted for the other states it still needs the test in CA.

The other solution of course, is to acquire Automotive Manufactuar status. Neither route is cheap.

But with a Manufactuar cert, AFAIK one can drive just about (literally) anything. Including Euro cars that have had nothing done to them, etc.

I think that most people don't mind paying for smog and registration fees, but their cars just won't pass the California smog test. Although, the registration fees in California are very high compared to other states. Everyone is going to be reporting their neighbor when they see them drive down the street with out of state plates. I feel for the people that can't get their cars smogged. My wife just got a ticket on her Porsche in S.F. for no front plate (her car was parked at a meter - and we have CA plates on all of our car).

    Daryl,

I was told that the fine for no front license plate in SF is $230!! It's insane. hence, the reason why I dont park the 348 in SF.

    Please keep us posted.

I am all for people paying their share of the taxes but why should i have to rat them out. Sounds like big brother watching you! What should we expect next...

I was stopped by CHP on Christmas eve on I280 N, and since they could not pin me for anything, they gave me a ticket for not having front license plate. The officer told me they had 911 calls that an orange Ferrari was speeding on the road...Bolognese! The fine was for I believe little over a $100 in SM county. But, here's the interesting part. When I rigged something to get it signed off and took it to the local sheriff station, they could not believe I got the ticket for this nonsense. And then the guy calls up his sergeant to come and check out the car and both of them were laughing and excited telling me to take the plate off as soon I got home. Before which the sergeant stopped the traffic for me to do a burn out leaving the station. Cost $10 to get it fixed, and it's been off the front as soon as I got home.

    Cheers,
    Matt

It was never about safety and serving. They 'saw an orange Ferrari speeding' Great! Was it hurting anybody? No. Was it even likely to? No.

    Clearly all about money now.

Matt- Next? Expect the 'citizen reports' to no longer be volentary.

It's a pity, I know a couple people in the CHP, and they're good men.

Manufactuar status is pretty much Carte Blanche though. That's how Porsche gets prototype Carrera GTs into testing in Death Valley.

Thanks Art for feeling for a fellow Ferrarist. I used to take my car out on I280 and like you say drive my car and stay out of trouble. I got stopped two separate times for two separate non issues that I said no more. There are so many CHPs there nowadays that even if I am taking a legitimate trip up to SF I try to avoid I280 between Edgewood and Hwy 92. Thank god for good lawyers in SF and SM counties. Speeding tickets can be dismissed for a nominal cost and hassle free.

    Cheers,
    Matt

I got whacked by this used car sales tax. I bought my car from Atlanta, and registered it at the DMV. Luckily it was beyond 30 years old, so I didn't have to do jack in terms of smog or other California-ization. But I reported the truth about the sales date and sales price on the form, and they hit me with a $5K sales tax on the sale!!! In addition to the license fee of course.
I read later that if you keep the car out of state for 30 days or something after you buy, you can avoid paying the sales tax.

I believe that it has to be registered for 90 days in another state under your name and at some adress that makes sense. I didn't really have time for this so I'm not doing it. Do you think the dmv will believe that the 355 cost 10k?

Very interesting. I live off of 92 (Hillsborough, faster than taking Black mountain for me), and regularly blast through the Edgewood / 92 areas.

The trick is this: 1) keep a V1. No question about it. 2) when you are northbound past edgewood, keep it to ~85 or so. Reason being *sometimes* CHP will sit up on the vista point exits, and you can't see them. But they always have their radar on. I've onlys een it happen twice.

Actually, I've never been pulled over in the 550, and only once in this area (late at night getting onto 92E from 280N).
