We have a laptop that has never worked right since we bought it, this week the hard drive stopped working. I had another put in but told them not to put windows on it. I put unbutu on it and it is no longer freezing while surfing and is working much, much quicker.

I'm now about to go look and see what software I can use on it.

    Any unique to unbutu suggestions?

just in general you might not be able to find commercial software for ubuntu, but almost always there is a program that has similar function readily available.

Really, the whole "heart and soul" of Linux in general and Ubuntu in particular is open-source, free software. That's very much the whole idea. Just search the repositories - there are many thousands of good programs out there- it's just a whole different 'vibe' in what you'll find. Open source / Linux aren't for everyone.

Good luck in your quest - feel free to PM me if you need help, as I'm a long-time Ubuntu user.

Congratulations on getting out from the M$ world! :)

    Assuming you're using the "desktop" release start out by poking at the stuff that's already there - You've already got;

    - Openoffice - M$ Office "clone"
    - The Gimp - Photoshop
    - Various text, audio & video editors
    - Audio capture/ipod management etc
    - Too many games!
    - etc.

Beyond that, as Jedi noted, go to "install S/W" and run down the list - Chances are good you'll find more than you ever wanted!

    Cheers,
    Ian

Thanks. I haven't had much time to play with it. Hopefully this weekend I will.

I've been using Ubuntu on my netbook for a few weeks now, and really enjoy it. It is Ubuntu 10, but I switched back to the familiar interface instead of the Evolution (or whatever they call it) because it was just too spartan for me.

Ubuntu, with Chrome on this little Asus AspireOne has been rock solid -- and zippy. The only real complaint has been the loss of my "Fn" keys for sound and brightness. I use the menu commands now instead of simply hitting things like Fn-F8.

I use Chrome, Remmina Remote Desktop, OpenOffice, and FileZilla. I'm sure the machine and O/S can do lots more, but those are the core apps that I use most. Again, zero problems. Very stable.

(My Hackintosh, while I enjoyed it on the other little netbook just drove me nuts because I felt the screen was too small for a proper Snow Leopard experience)

Ubuntu 10x was a bust for me since the installer gave me gave me no option to have internet access at first boot. There are three ways to get internet into my machine and 10x gave me nothing. This is the 21st century, and I'm not going to print out an 8-page manifesto on how to enable wi-fi on the most popular device on the planet on top of my complete refusal to have to use a CLI to install drivers for anything.

21st century and all that. Guys, MS has been making this easy since 1994.

I got 11x beta. Malevolent Mangina or whatever stupid name they give their releases. Still no Out Of The Box Internet Access without having to boot into Windows and printing out some gigantic manifesto on how to use CLI and typing sudo 3214 times just to get wi-fi to work.

Also, no printer driver so in order to print, I have to boot into Windows.

Also, what the hell is up with all the gawt damned forks? Open Office is Now Libre Why Do I Phookin Care Office...this on top of the roughly 819 forks from Gnome, X and KDE. I said this in 1998...devs need to pick a single direction on DTL and go with it. All these years later, and installing software and drivers is still a major PITA.

I guess I'm confused. I installed Ubuntu and immediately it worked with my WiFi. When I upgraded to the new (silly name) v11, it continued to work.

My cousin picked up ubuntu in tijuana. Doc gave him some penicillin and it cleared up, mostly.

    +1

I've now installed V9, V10 & V11 (sometimes from scratch, others over other stuff) and have never entered *anything* at the command line - It just flat out works - No stupid drivers to download & install, no anti-crapware nonsense needed and *zero* pain.

Having said that, I'm not sure about the new "look & feel" in 11 - Fortunately, it's easy to switch back to "Classic" view - Which I haven't done yet as I guess I may grow to like it.

As for "Libre Office", I noticed that too - It's just an Ubuntu (and a couple of others) enhanced version of OpenOffice - No big deal - Works the same.

    Cheers,
    Ian
