Hi...I have #48255...all red including the rear spoiler and the airboxes w/ tan interior and the set of tan luggage. I've owned the car since 1986...and have loved every minute! This Boxer received a platinum award at the 2009 FCA meet at Road America. The car currently has a set of 17" Carobu-style wheels w/ Pirelli P-zero tires and a Nouvalari SuperSport exhaust, which makes her sound like a BBLM. )) I've retained all the original bits including the exhaust system and the wheels w/ the TRX tires. She's a beaut, John! 27 years of ownership to boot. If you are willing to share, it would be great to hear how you got the car in '86 and what the wild and woolly market was like back then. You have really seen first hand the extremes of the Boxer market. Congrats, thanks for sharing. W
Thanks for your kind words W! Long story to follow...I saw my first Boxer in Portland, OR in 1982. I must have been standing there for at least an hour just looking at the car and drooling! I loved the mix of the mostly curved lines of the body set-off by the straight lines separating the upper/lower body halves, the front grill, the rear deck and rear grill louvers, the airboxes and the buttresses on the rear deck. I started subscribing to the FML soon afterwards. I tried on a 308 for size and it was just too small for me. I located several Boxers listed in the FML in 1986. I looked at two in Warwick, RI, one of which was red over black with a black interior and a cloth headliner and the other was all black, but the "group" selling those cars only wanted to know how much I would offer without any asking price mentioned. They were reportedly selling them in part to try to buy a drug-dealer's government-seized 250 GTO. I then booked a flight to Chicago and looked at a car there, but the owner only took me out for a ride and wouldn't let me drive the car. DUHHH! That car was also red over black. I went on to Denver, where I found my car...all red with tan all leather seats and interior, a black dash and a matching tan leather headliner. The owner was great, tossed me the keys and I had an amazing drive! He also told me about the history of the car and what he thought might be any issues. He was the first owner after the car had been federalized. I gave him a check for $10K on the spot as a deposit. The car had only 3,600 Km on the clock. Just about that time, the market was just starting to get crazy, but the owner was a true gentleman and sold the car to me for the agreed upon price. I arranged transport and she arrived in VT just before Christmas. I started attending FCA meets driving on the tracks at Lime Rock Park, Watkins Glen and Summit Point. I also drove at Mosport when a group of VT Ferrari owners were invited up by the local Canadian chapter. For two years in a row, I went up to Montreal and got to drive on the F1 track before the GP race in Ferrari parade laps. I knew that the car was lacking some things. The original Pioneer radio had been replaced with a Blaupunkt unit, there were no luggage straps, the pouch for the toolkit was missing as was some of the "stuff" that should have been in the owner's pouch, etc. My sister, who by then had a 355, talked me into going to the FCA meet at Indy in 2005 and to have the car judged, which I did rather reluctantly. I came away with a Silver award...and I got to drive the F1 course at Indy! Over the next two years, I worked on correcting/replacing some of the missing items and at the FCA meet at Watkins Glen in 2007...the car received a Gold award. This was my second time driving the full course at the Glen...and the Boxer had a chance to really stretch her legs! I drove the car to both of those events. The drive to Indy, which was about 1,000 miles each way, was just after the BIG service and after the car had been in storage for a number of years, because I was seriously involved in autocrossing my E Prepared Scirocco. Another two years went by...still working on making things "right". I went to the FCA meet at Road America in 2009 and reached the Platinum award level. Very, very gratifying to say the least! Road America is also a wonderful track like the Glen...long and with lots of elevation changes and great corners. It was also really "interesting" to drive on that track one morning in light rain on old TRXs!!! Between the Glen and RA, I saw a set of Boxer luggage on E-bay and was the successful bidder. I also found a replacement, correct Pioneer radio on the Bay. Other bits and pieces have come from Dick Fritz/Amerispec, Tom Shaughnessy, Ricambi America, T. Rutland's and Eurospares. I found my current 17" wheels through the FML. With Coker Tire asking $635 or more by now for TRXs, I can get a full set of high-performance BFG tires for the price of one TRX. I'll use the new wheels/tires for regular driving and track events and use my original wheels with the TRXs for judging. The old parts are getting more difficult to find and are more costly, but still worth the effort! In the year or so after I bought the car, Boxer asking prices were up to $200K and above. Some would say that I was foolish not to sell the car at that time. In fact, I could have probably owned several Boxers after the market tanked, if I did...but I fell in love with this car and didn't want to have any other(s). Even as Boxer prices have climbed in recent years, I still feel that these cars are very undervalued. As I said in my previous post, I've loved every minute of my Boxer ownership. I look forward to having many more enjoyable years and track events with my car. It has been a labor of love and I feel very fortunate to own one of these special cars.
