I'd flat bed it to my mechanic and cross my fingers! What are you thinking?? A Ferrari that's making whining noises isn't going to heal itself by revving it.

Could be an overtightened alternator belt...could be a bad refurb job on the alternator...either way I'd guess that a loud whining noise signifies a failing bearing.

Could be anything of course. Since this guy says he's stumped, I assume he's either not mechanically minded or already eliminated the obvious like a bad rebuild. If the whine can't be traced directly to the alternator, I'd err on the side of caution and have a mechanic look at it, and not run the car.

It's good refurb that I know, but how tight should the belt be, I did tighten it pretty tight! Also I think i'm well flooded and have just taken out the plugs and they're well coked up so a good clean is in order, but let me know how tight please for the belt??? Plus he put a new bearing in!

(Have to agree that an objectional "noise" has to be something mechanical, but) Have you measured the voltage coming out of the alternator at ~2000 RPM (i.e., the voltage at the battery terminals at ~2000 RPM)? If this is a US version TR and the alternator goes over-voltage, it will blow the fuse in the protection relay and cause a "weak running" situation because there's no +12V power to the injection system -- just something easy to rule in or out.

A whine in a Ferrari, scary.

Make sure your battery is fully charged, remove the alternator belt, A/C belt etc., start the car and see if the whine goes away.

That would also apply to the later Euro TR with KE-Jetronic (engine family F113B), but if you have an early Euro K-Jet F113A it doesn't.
