During its development in the early 90s, we tested the C-17 in Eglin’s Climatic Lab from -60 to +120 deg F. We could even run the engines but not above idle or we would suck the building in. Then we flew to Fairbanks Alaska for flight testing at -30 deg, which included icy runway braking tests at 100 knots. The hydraulic fluid has to be warm enough to takeoff so there is a temperature sensor high up in the tail. We went to Yuma, Arizona for the hot weather testing.

Dover AFB(Dover, DE) has the C-17 and C-5M, so I see them fairly regularly. I stopped by a few weeks ago(after I flew over the Baltimore bridge collapse), and there where two Israeli cargo planes on the weapons loading tarmac. Very small insignia's. A guy I talked to in the civilian area said they show up often. I believe that location also processes all deceased service members from overseas(maybe domestic too?) from every US war ever fought. I haven't visited that section, but I understand it is possible as a civilian with prior arrangements.
