Saw the Tesla announcement for the "gigafactory" today. Once (if?) completed it will DOUBLE the world's supply of Li ion cells. You can't knock Musk for ambition.
I've driven 3 different Model S's (85, P85 and P85+) and they are incredible cars. I also have an M5 which I think is a direct comparison for the intended use for the car. New vs new, the cars are almost exactly same price and I much prefer the Tesla. Living in AR (no supercharger stations) I couldn't go on long drives easily but other than that, it's the car for me. I don't own one yet b/c I'm trying to build a house but I do have a deposit on a Model X (SUV). For those that haven't driven one, do it if you can. It's an incredible machine. GT
Can you get 20 miles on a charge when the temp hits zerro F? Then what start the generator mounted on the roof or in the trailer? Just saying. Nice city car for use in the summer to get back and forth from the supermarket. GTS Bruce
Whoopie! Write when there are at least 1000 charging stations per state and you can fill up the batteries in 2 minutes. GTS Bruce
You are very uninformed on this subject matter. Plenty of people drive a Tesla in sub zero F. Haters gonna hate. At least use real arguments to bash the car. Not stupid crap like this. Kai
Why? Do you have a gas station in your house? You can fill a 24 gallon tank in two minutes in your car? Don't buy one if you don't want one. Just don't appear so ignorant in the subject. Kai
At the Venetian hotel in Vegas, you can charge your Tesla for FREE (there's only like 6 charging stations but...) As long as people give fuel away for free, it's difficult to stop them.
Why do people ***** about the cost of gas but think nothing of going to Starbucks and spending four bucks on a cup of coffee? Gas is cheap.
Cousin in MPLS is on his second winter w/his. Tesla comes out and installs winter tires (kinda setting the mark in customer service, too), and he runs the car all winter. Been a bit chilly this year, too.
Jerry, I enjoyed the times in your 430... especially on Paupers through the Valley of Fire. There is a friend I have to connect you with, he is the "product lifecycle coordinator" at Tesla whom I went to school with... he is down in NB often and we should link up for a meal. Even with a dedicated subsidiary to these larger corporations, they won't be able to iterate as fast as Tesla. Elon uses the lean / startup / tech space mentality to a historically slow industry. Also, my friend mentioned above contributes to the fact they've already done 14,000 updates to the Model S.
I've driven it. Its quiet, its got torque, and it handles ok because of the low CG. The interior is terrible, the assembly quality is crappy, the range in cold weather is iffy, and if I want to drive say 200 miles away, I'd need a long extension cord or a hell of a lot of time to kill. Don't get me started on those ridiculous door handles.
Taylor - I tried to PM you but I think your inbox is full. Send me your number - would be great to get together and meet your friend.
Quad - Have you heard about the Tesla Supercharger stations that already exist? Free charging and you stop anywhere from 20 - 40 minutes while you enjoy your meal break. Many Tesla's have already driven coast to coast for free. As to the build quality, you must have seen 1 bad apple. Consumer Reports surveys several hundred owners of every car in existence and the Model S got BY FAR the highest score of any car on the road in terms of customer satisfaction. I agree with rkruff, you obviously have another agenda.
Kai, Don't waste your time trying to educate people hell-bent on arguing about something they know nothing about and don't seem to care to actually understand. People are whining about the range, the price, the reliability. They know nothing about the vehicle, just what they WANT to believe. The best one is that it's 'too expensive.' Elon Musk wanted to build a luxury brand, not another so so American auto maker. I've said it countless times and I'll say it again: the reason for Tesla's success so far is because he took the Lexus approach. He started with a premium, aspirational product and is now strategically moving down the ladder while maintaining his brand's cool factor. People, maybe not Ferrari chat people, but many people want a Tesla because they covet this halo product model S, much like Lexus did with the LS. Lexus went straight at Mercedes and identified themselves as a serious luxury brand while Infiniti and Acura ***** footed their way into the 'entry luxury' market and haven't had anything near the success or growth of Lexus. Tesla is shaking things up and people are afraid of change. They're skeptical of change and they don't trust new technologies and new brands. That's good and fine with companies like Fisker, but I think if you've spent any time at all following Tesla and Elon Musk you need to respect what the guy has been able to accomplish and his dedication to Tesla. He's done more to change the automotive landscape than anyone has for a while.
Rick, good guess, but no. I've got plenty of seat time in a telsa. It literally does nothing for me. Yes, there are superchargers, widespread they are not. 40 minute stop? what if its not meal time? bottom line, its something I don't want. I can find other cars that deliver good performance.
Tesla has some pretty big plans cooking... Nevada on short list for $5 billion Tesla battery factory | Las Vegas Review-Journal
Not sure where the raw material is going to come from. That factory could consume most of the world's supply of mined Lithium by itself. If I had to guess he is banking on massive tax concessions and a government grant to fund the cost of the factory. Something as sexy and cool as electric cars would make a nice photo op for certain politicians. After all, it's our grandchildren's money they're spending...
$200 Overpriced! Since the OP was more related to valuing Tesla stock rather than debating the merits of the product, here's a spot of news re stock pricing: Is the most bearish Tesla analyst too extreme? - Feb. 27, 2014
I just watched a segment on the news last night where Consumer Reports ranked the Tesla S as their overall favourite pick of the year. The road test was impressive. A Tesla S still has nothing to do with any Ferrari and does not replace a Ferrari. If you are choosing between a Tesla and a Ferrari you don't get it and never will.
