I'm an '01 360 Spider F1 owner and happened to see and test drive a 348 ts I saw for sale at a local dealer's lot. It was my first time driving a 348 and I was pleasantly surprised after having heard less than stellar things about it (but that's another issue I know you've discussed to no end here). The car feels pretty strong, nice feel to it, obviously a bit raw w/o power steering, etc., but nothing like the negative stuff I've heard about it.

    The details...

    1992 Targa
    42k miles
    red/tan
    interior in overall decent shape
exterior in good shape, no obvious paint work except small touch-up spots
    engine looks clean
some scuff evidence on lower front spoiler
some minor curb rash on 1 wheel
    targa top in good shape

-dealer claims they just had all 4 calipers, rotors, and pads replaced for $6800...who knows if its BS or not...

    The big issues:
    -No records available!
-mis-matched tires (both bridgestones but different models)
-all 4 tires in need of replacement

    Asking price is $59,900.

I already know that the price is over market value from my brief research...but what do you guys think the appropriate price would be assuming a clean or semi-clean PPI?

$59000 is laughable price for a car with no service records and moderate mileage. There are lot of cars on the market with decent history. No need to buy a questionable car. The fact that the previous owner or dealer either didn't know nor cared enough to put 2 different tires on this car makes me wary - what else did he skip on? Engine Oil changes? Gearbox oil change?

What is the VIN #. It could be a 92 car built in 91. Does it have the battery in the front or in the rear of the car.

    I agree on that price!

It is a '91 build, I think June or July if I remember correctly.

    VIN is ZFFRG36AXNOO90674

(Not sure if those 2 digits in the middle are zeros or o's)

The reality is that it is worth $40k because a prudent owner will have a major service performed and have all the other little details taken care of to the tune of $10k. But what will really happen is someone less experienced with Ferraris will pick it up for around low $50's thinking he got a "deal", will slap some tires on it, and start driving. Not knowing the risks he's taking. And who knows, he MAY have many trouble free miles, just changing fluids...but....

I am always so suspect of these "no records" cars...there has to be a "story" somewhere, cause what reasonable seller would not want to show records of proper repairs and maintenance performed on a car.

Without service records and that mileage somewhere in the upper 30Ks. If it is super clean 40K. Since there are no records you can assume that you need a major to be safe.

agree with the 40K worth and plan on spending 10K for a major and whatever else crops up. As far as records go, currently not a lot of 348s have full records and most of those that do had their last major 5 years ago or more, so you still need to do a major on them. My perspective is that if you know you have to spend 7-10K on top of purchase price and will have that work done properly by a qualified technician, it resets the clock so to speak on the records.

btw, a spider just got listed on ferrariads for $48K with recent major. That is a steal. Also, Jotec, another board member was selling his car (a ts) for 45K and it is NICE with lots of upgrades.

    hope this helps

No doubt any 348 is WORTH $59,900... but as stated above, you can find a nice example for less.

IMHO any 348 below $60k should be snapped up!

A few other things I forgot to mention in my original post:

-Passenger side window seems extremely slow to operate as if something is sticking

-Seat belts are very slow to re-coil

-Front end vibration at around 100 mph, probably from the front tires being at the wear bars. May be something else like alignment, etc. though...

-Car does have a very smooth idle and smooth acceleration. Shifting seems about as smooth as I expected a 348 to be. Clutch action and engagement feels good. Of course none of this necessarily means anything when I don't have the service records...

-Car seems to have stock exhaust by appearance and sound.

-No sign of modifications that I can see

-Fairly new and nice presumably aftermarket prancing horse floormats

The passenger window issue can be fixed for about $60. Most 348's suffer from this disease.

    No mods= a good thing

Service records not available= Good for the buyer, not a deal breaker by any means. Buy it right, have it serviced by "your guy" and enjoy.

The most important records are the recent ones....Which in this case, (if you buy it) would be yours :D

I would say mid 40's would be the right price for that particular car. Someone may be willing to pay more, but I would not. To me the biggest hit to the value is the mileage, not the service records.

yeah, if you could get that car in the low 40s, and do ALL of the major work yourself, you would have a perfect 50K car

  12. So it looks like upper 30's to maybe mid fourties is the number for that vehicle from all the responses thus far. I would think that mid 40's would be a lot for a vehicle with that kind of description, and that many miles.

How would you say a good buy is on one like that with 20k miles?

High $40's. These cars seem to be a bargain in general. Husker got the best deal around last year. This year the recent black spider for $45k was the bargain IMHO. My dad is selling his 94 spider and declined an offer in the low $60k range. I think he should have sold, but my guess is that it will get used by his next wife / gf.
