Vince: I wholeheartedly suggest you take the Techniques of Karting class at Jim Russell Karting School. The track at Sears Point is excellent and the karts are well maintained. You will get some great instruction from the instructors and plenty of seat time. Once you do that, you can see if you really want to buy a kart or go to the track and rent one, or do the Russell Arrive and Drive series.

Take the track class at Infineon. Drop me an email when complete and you can drive one of my 125cc karts at the infineon or Atwater track. I do have a '02 Invader with a Yamaha KT100 for sale in excellent condition for $2K. That would be a great kart to get your feet wet in. It turns about 65MPH with my fat butt in it!

The top pic is the 100cc and the one in the trailer is my new 125 electric start.

How much is it to get into Karting?

I've always done open track events at Infineon, Mazda and Thunderhill and prices are getting pretty steep with the different clubs.

Plus the Kart must be easier and less expensive to maintain than a street/track car?

If you're going to get started, DONT start with a shifter. Start with either a 100 or 125 (Rotex Class, with electric start). The shifters are too much to learn starting out. Pete's cart is a good one. Take him up on the ride, I think you'll enjoy it.

    ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

The only thing I has asked for this Christmas. Everyone I have talked to has said that this is a great starting point, and after plowing some fields in Atwater today, I feel I really need to regroup and relearn.

I would suggest picking it up.

Thanks for the advice guys. I need to check karting out. I was very close to buying a dedictated autocross/track 944 but not am second guessing it and will check out more of the karting sites.

    Thanks.

I picked up a used Rotax about a month ago and have had a lot of fun with it so far. I would recommend the 100 cc classes, Rotax or TAG (Touch and Go) for someone starting out. You first need to figure out where you will likely race, if you'll race in local clubs or at tracks around you, and then see what classes they run. It is more fun to run in a class with more entries than in a class with just a couple of karts. The chance that you'll find someone to race against is greater the more karts there are, and that is where the fun is. Also, it is a lot more fun to win a race with 20 karts than one with 5.

Shifters may be fast and cool, but if you are a beginner, you will have your hands full with the 100cc, Rotax or TAG. I personally prefer spec classes like Rotax and TAG.

I got lucky and have won both races I have entered so far (entered a third race but missed practice, qualifying, pre-final and only got to do a handful of laps total) and have had an absolute blast.

    Good luck and have fun!
