Britain's top female racer Katherine Legge is testing for the Minardi team at Vallelunga. Australian aviation entrepreneur Paul Stoddart, attending his final test after selling Minardi to Red Bull, said the Guildford-born racer hit a concrete wall after going off at a corner on her second lap. Legge is the first woman driver to have a proper Formula One test for more than a decade although American Sarah Fisher performed a brief demonstration run with McLaren at Indianapolis in 2002.

The 25-year-old from Northampton will be the first woman to have a meaningful F1 test since the days of Giovanna Amati back 1991. Legge has made a big impression this year in her first year as a professional racer, driving in the Toyota Atlantic Championship. Legge has been setting new standards throughout her career, dating back to 2000 when she was the first woman to take pole position in a British Formula Ford race. She struggled to find money to compete in Britain and in 2004 went to the United States to race in theNorth American Formula Renault. She then convinced Kevin Kalkhoven to sponsor her this season with his PKV racing team. Legge made the most of it with three Atlantic wins as a rookie, notably in her first race at Long Beach where she went from seventh on the grid to win. This was followed by wins in Edmonton and San Jose, and ended the year third in the championship.
Legge plans to compete in the Atlantic series again next year and hopes to move up to Champ Car in 2007. However, if she can impress in Formula 1 she may be able to fulfil her original ambition to become an F1 driver. The test has come about because of Legge's connections with Kalkhoven who, in addition to running PKV Racing, is also the owner of Cosworth, which supplies engines to Minardi.
Legge will be joined by three other young drivers in the Vallelunga test.

Not to be too smug about it, but this is the woman the UK press put miles ahead of 'our' Danica. Something that really irked me.

Of course, she's British, the UK press has a long history of doing such things. If Senna, and Prost hadn't pimp slapped Mansell on a regular basis they would have been screaming that he was better too. As far as thier individual ablities go, I'd put Danica ahead of Legge at this point because of the fact that she's has competed against the best in her chosen series and held her own at times. Legge might have won a couple of races and looked good doing it but who did she beat? Up and comers and never will be's. You could build a case that the competion was better when Danica was in atlantics. She didn't win the championship nor dominate. Legge is still an unknown. Actually i see her crashing out a lot in CART if she gets a ride there.

Apparently she didn't damage the car too badly. will run again today apparently.

The Minardi F1 Team today launched into the second day of its final test session at the Autodromo Vallelunga. Driving the Minardi Cosworth PS05 chassis today were Chanoch Nissany, continuing his ongoing programme with the team, Uruguay’s Juan Caceres, Davide Rigon of Italy, and Katherine Legge, who ventured on track late in the afternoon.

Unfortunately, the young British driver was caught out by the cold conditions on the first run, her car spinning and brushing a concrete wall at the side of the track. The resulting damage was relatively minor, but with light fading and temperatures falling, it was decided to postpone her test until tomorrow.

    Katherine Legge
“It was great driving a Formula One car for the first time, even if I did end up learning about traction control the hard way! The accident was really just down to a lack of experience, but it most definitely hasn’t dampened my enthusiasm for continuing with the test tomorrow and trying to do the best job I can. I really want to thank Paul Stoddart and Minardi for what is a fantastic opportunity.”

Well, she has actually won a race. Three, to be exact.

Katherine will turn out to be a much better racer than Danica.

Yes but that was in Atlantics with weaker comp. Legge still hasn't won anything in the big time. Danica is up against the best of the IRL. There is no way to know that for sure. Saying Legge will be better than Patrick is premature.

Mortica had two years in Atlantics with a very well-funded team, and couldn't close the deal.

Same deal in IRL. Sure, she's a "rookie", but she had a good team with a Honda. I'd be willing to concede on her having no wins, if she had been a consistent podium finisher. She obviously qualified well, but simply went backwards once the green flag fell. Looking back on her Atlantics career, it was much the same.

Legge at least makes passes for position, and damn good ones at that.

I guess we'll see next year when Legge gets a ChampCar ride, won't we? ;)

Danica didn't win but she was no wanker either

    2004 - Toyota Atlantic Championship

Patrick finished third in the Toyota Atlantic Championship posting 269 points and ten top-five results in 12 races in the Argent Mortgage Toyota/Swift
She was the only driver in Atlantic’s this season to complete every lap
She became the first female driver to win a pole position in Toyota Atlantic when she collected her first Atlantic pole position for Round 5 at Portland
She collected three podium results in 2004 finishing on the podium (3rd) at Monterrey, Mexico, second at Portland (Round 4) and third at Cleveland
At Denver (Round 10) she captured the Argent Fast Lap Award for posting the fastest race lap en route to a fourth place finish

Legge won three times but who did she beat to win? I've never heard of any of these guys and i haven't heard of too many of them being talked about for champcar rides or any other for that matter. Danica was running a against guys like Almendinger who are in champcars now. The field was a bit weaker last year then it was in previous years which flattered Legge a bit. We won't know anything next year because Legge and Patrick are running in two different series so we won't know who's better. I see Legge crashing out a lot next year she seemed a bit wild this year..................Mortica that's funny
