I think it's safe to say that this thread can be laid to rest as a result of some 'spirited' posts bringing about the 'New Rule', this and the 'signal your intentions' were brought to bear the ever increasing problem of the disregard towards the concept of 'privilege' to operate a motor vehicle & 'rules of the road' over the past couple of decades. I was really looking forward to some deeper thought towards real solutions;.... with Tommy 'two thumbs' Thompson texting @ blistering speeds behind the wheel and cell phone use being outlawed (at least hands-on) in more communities everyday, it truely illustrates the importance of paying attention and common courtesy.

VEHICLE CODES 21659 AND 21650 IN SOUTH FLORIDA ARE 95612 AND 05612 RESPECTIVELY. THE ORIGINAL CODES WERE SUBJECTED AND CHANGED TO A NEW LAW CALLED "CAFE CON LECHE AMMENDMENT", SO THAT TRUCKS AND TOYOTA COROLLAS COULD TRAVEL 45 MPH ON THE LEFT LANE WITH TOTAL IMPUNITY. SALUD !!

The California Vehicle Code makes doing just that illegal. Period! Driving in America sucks! Drive in Germany where drivers move out of the way in the left lane and you quickly realize that weaving in and out of traffic, American style, is actually slower there as they system of moving over truly works! Do folks not remember when side mirrors only came on the left side? Back then, it was assumed you didn't pass on the left. Now we have utter chaos on our highways due to ignorance and the, sorry, I'm going to say it, SUV--"I own this lane Attitutude" that makes Americans so beloved around the world.

Reality check: The lanes on the highway are for efficient flow of traffic and owned by no one individual.

The law says, irregardless of your speed, you do not drive in the left lane! Only if you are passing.

Next time I'm pulled over for speeding or weaving through traffic I'm going to grill the poor CHP officer for his failure to write tickets for left lane hogs!

By the way, Dave Barry wrote the funniest left lane editorial ever. He suggests nuclear missles to get rid of the Wankers clocking the left lanes! AMEN!

Vehicle Code Sec. 21659. Upon a roadway which is divided into three lanes a vehicle
shall not be driven in the extreme left lane at any time, nor in the
center lane except when overtaking and passing another vehicle where
the roadway ahead is clearly visible and the center lane is clear of
traffic within a safe distance, or in preparation for a left turn, or
where the center lane is at the time allocated exclusively to
traffic moving in the direction the vehicle is proceeding and is
signposted to give notice of such allocation. This section does not
apply upon a one-way roadway.

21650. Upon all highways, a vehicle shall be driven upon the right
half of the roadway, except as follows:
(a) When overtaking and passing another vehicle proceeding in the
same direction under the rules governing that movement.

When I'm already doing 10-15 mph over the posted speed limit, I feel no obligation pull to the right to let some hot dog pass me. He can fu_____ go around! Furthermore, many of the right lanes on many of CA's freeways are in such bad shape that even 65 mph can be hazardous, (esp US 80 between Sac and Reno- if you've driven it, you know what I mean).

You agree with "everything" Horsefly said, including presumably his claim that the justifications given for exceeding the posted limit are "insane." Yet you're exceeding the limit, too, just like the guy behind you, but he's the "hot dog." Uh huh.

You're just another guy who's speeding* and who's in the way. That doesn't really leave a philosophical leg to stand on.

*Not in and of itself a big deal to me, of course.

I cannot stand the people who are in the left lane doing about 50 and you can see the cell phone in front of them text messaging, and don't even get me started on people who have no distraction at all, but are just that oblivious to the fact that they have 2 miles of traffic backed up behind thme.

First, let's all be clear... speed doesn't kill. Never has, never will. It's the sudden deceleration that does it.

Second, you two sit on your high horse and feel justified to block the left lane, or worse control it to what you feel is a safe speed in which to exceed the limit!! The danger you create is forcing others to go around you. Get a clue. Drive right - THAT IS SAFETY. The law, either by speeding or by driving left, is being broken. The problem with blocking the left is that you create additional maneuvers that involve more cars, more lanes, and increases the chance of danger.
