I have a 1999 355 F1 Spider. My question is in regards to clutch material and performance when in use with the F1 system. I have recently tracked down a kevlar clutch kit (thanks to FerrariOldMan). What are the differences in performance compared to the ferrari brand organic material? I've heard that kevlar can be grippy but glazes easily. I wouldn’t want the F1 system to glaze the kevlar clutch since it doesn’t seem particularly aggressive when engaging – at least compared to what is capable of a manual system. Since I have the F1 system, and have very little control over how the clutch engages, is it wiser to go with the softer organic material? In your experience which clutch will out-perform and/or have a longer life?

Thank you very much for your help.

The kevlar clutch is going to be harder on your flywheel than the standard one. The flywheel is expensive to replace and the clutch disc is not. The 355 is probably the easiest car on the planet to change a clutch in. IMHO I would stick with the organic unit and change it yourself. Regards, Vern

I have heard of a few very unhappy experiences with non standard friction materials in F1's.

They were all removed with very few miles and replaced with O.E.

How much are you willing to pay to be a guinnea pig?

I used a kelvar disc in my 308 (supercharged to 500+hp). It was a bit grappy, but it worked until I mistakenly pulled away from a stop sign in 3rd gear...the car has so much torque I honestly was well away before I even noticed the wrong gear, but the damage was done....the clutch was glazed and would no longer handle even 1/2 throttle. I'm know using a titlon carbon-carbon and it's magic, if you want to upgrade your clutch, the tilton is truely an upgrade, kelvar is more of a band-aid IMO.

I would recommend sticking to the OEM style organic disc. The F1 clutch engagement system was most likely designed around the "grab" characteristics of the organic material. Also, IMO Kevlar is not a good choice for clutch facing anyways.
