Florida Ferrari Gods! I am heading to Key West for a week in early Dec and was wondering if anyone had tips, must do's must don'ts etc.... Gary Espada 8394 EtypeFHC 887465
Howdy…Latitudes restaurant on Sunset Key, around sunset, especially if you are traveling with that special someone. I highly recommend it. Also, try at least one piece of key lime pie, if you've never had it before. Same thing for conch fritters. The Hemingway house tour is kind of cool. If you are interested in going more far afield, a trip out to Fort Zachary Taylor is also enjoyable...T
Islamorada fish company is a must. A great place to stop for lunch on the way down. Also on the way down, feed the tarpon at Ricks if you haven't done that either.
My parents have had a house down there for years. I make at least one trip a year. As for conch fritters I feel the best ones believe it or not are the ones sold at Mallory Square during the sunset celebration, they are fantastic. The best Keylime pie, and one of the few to still actually use meringue is Blue Heaven which also has great breakfast. One thing I highly recommend is the butterfly place on Duval. It may sound strange but it actually is beautiful inside full of butterflies and flamingos, just really interesting if you have a family they will love it. If you haven't been down there I would recommend taking the tour train as it gives you a good idea of what's around. The Hemingway house is a must see, and of course you must go to a sunset celebration at Mallory Square. There actually is a small very old aquarium down there as well that isn't too bad. As far as restaurants I agree with the above poster that Latitudes is fantastic, I also recommend Grand Cafe, Banana Cafe, and Mangia Mangia. Also make sure you take a day to drive up the keys to around Islemorada. There is a great beach park up there called Bahia Honda that I highly recommend.
As said before Blue Heaven for breakfast is a must. December is a great time to visit. If the weather is good a sunset cruise to watch the sun go down is a must. Mallory square sunset festival kinda wraps up Key West nicely you'll get a real taste of the people there.
sorry I didn't respond sooner but thanks all VERY much . I am really looking forward to this . A fellow Lambo owner I know is coming down from his winter home in Naples for a visit and He also mentioned Latitudes .... Keep those suggestions comin................... Gary Espada 8394 EtypeFHC 887465
For a non-Margaritaville dining experience try Pisces, some of the best seafood I've had in nearly 60 years of living in Florida. Located on a side street, accommodates maybe 30 people. Very quiet and elegant (well, for the Keys) if that's what your looking for one night.
Definitely try the laid back stuff - this is mile 0, after all - get morning coffee from Five Brothers on Southard, get a drink at the Green Parrott, hit up Faustos grocery store for fruit, drinks at the top of the Crowne Plaza, etc.
Wow incredible the responses thus far . Less than 2 weeks and I will be warm again ... Big thanks again to all posters Gary(aka frozen in Toronto) Espada 8394 EtypeFHC 887465
Totally forgot that! Very touristy thing to do, but it's a hoot, and it's great especially if it is around the time that Xmas lights will be out and about in KW T
The Hog's Breath Saloon is a fun place and so is Captain Tony's Saloon. Had dinner at Mangia Mangia a couple of times and it was good.
