I took Chelsea (who is 11) to the doctor yesterday with a bad ear ache (8 on a scale of 1-10). The doctor gave her antibotic drops and a liquid plus a Tylenol with codine. 36 hours later with a low grade fever, her ear still hurts. The codine does take the edge off the pain, but it still hurts.

Any words of wisdom that her and I can read here?

you just gotta tough it out. Ive been there many times. Try and soothe her pain with some Ice cream or something else nice to take her mind off it.

If the pain does not subside very quickly, get to an Ear, Nose, Throat specialist.

Inside the middle ear is a little tube that allows air in, which in turn allows naturally-occurring fluid to drain from the ear down to the throat. If that tube is blocked, well, think of putting your thumb over a straw when you remove it from a cup of soda - the fluid stays in there and allows germs to develop which in turn causes the infection.

A doctor can insert (surgically) very tiny tubes into the ear which allow the air in, thereby eliminating the problem.

Although 11 years of age is a little old for this to occur (most kids outgrow this phenomenon by about 7 or so), I have heard of it before. Both of my girls (8 and 3) have been through this, and with the younger one, we're not completely free of it yet.

Not trying to diagnose your child or anything, just a suggestion of something you might consider investigating and (I hope) ruling out.

If that's not the case, my wife's father used to heat up vegetable oil in a little spoon (warm it, not brutalize it) and pour it into her ear, and that seemed to work pretty well.

    Best of luck,

    Neil

Ear Aches are the worst. I last had one when I was 13 or 14 and it is just a horrible feeling. If tylenol doesn't work, try Motrin that seemed to help me a little.

A half hour after I posted this thread, we were off to the ER. Her pain was back with a 102o fever. The doctor stated that it could take another day or two to get rid of the pain and gave her drops to numb the pain. That worked better than the Tylenol with codine. This really sucks!

When I used to get ear infections, the ENT Dr. would flush the ear with warm water and peroxide, then put in a topical anesthetic powder.

He called it "Dr. Sperling's Magic Powder" and it was.

I just got over the most painful ear infection I've ever experienced. Came from swimming in my pool. I mean this was painful - went to the doc twice. Got some Percocets and some drops and it went away after two weeks. Not fun.

Odd - a few of us were just talking about the same thing.

As a kid (2 - 6 years old) - I would have sever ear aches a few times per Month - would last 1 or 2 days - be very painful - couldn't eat, sleep, etc (at least this is what my parents had told me.).

I had a miracle cure when I was 6 years old... They took both my tonsils and andnoids out. (Got to the point where my doctor said - doesn't have sore throats, etc.) but it is the only thing we can think to help... This is about the time in the 70's that they stop taking the tonsils and adnoids out as an every day activity (which they rarely do now).

I did not have a ear ache since then, nor do I really get sore throats.

The common practice is to not remove them - due to the potential need for filtration, etc... But I will tell you - barring that I die at a young age do to lack of Tonsils - I think it was worth it...
