    I was never allowed game consoles as a kid. My dad called them professional timewasters. I finally got an original Nintendo in 1998. I was 13 years old. I was only allowed to play it if I asked, and only for 30 minutes at a time. I upgraded to a Super Nintendo in 99 (right around the time that N64 was in its heyday). I can't say that I have any regrets about those house rules. I just found other, more productive ways of spending my time (like looking at cars ;) ). And of course, I was NEVER allowed to talk to either of my parents that way. I couldn't imagine talking to my mom like that.
