Ok, my next door neighbor acquired a huge unneutered male Pit Bull several months ago that is beyond vicious. I now can’t go into my back yard as it will jump the 4’ chain link fence separating the property & certainly rip me to shreds. I’m a dog lover but this one is freaky aggressive & will attack w/ no warning. Initially the owner kept it on a chain in his yard but now lets it loose. While talking to the owner this week, the dog lunged over the fence at me & was grabbed just in time. The owner is proud of his “guard dog”. Called Animal Control who said they really couldn’t do anything until the dog has actually attacked someone. Don’t really want to piss off the guy next door but this is scary. Suggestions?

Ethylene glycol - you made me LOL! And I was thinking of tucking my S&W 357 in my pants when I change the rear porch light this weekend. Rather have a double barrel sawed off shot gun tho. Unfortunately all I have is 357, 38, 22 revolvers & a Ruger bull barrel (hah) semi 22. Don’t think a 22 would pierce the skull of this monster. The crushing power of the jaws on this one is frightening.

At the very, very least, your neighbor needs to extend his fence so that the dog can not possibly get over it. If he isn't willing to that, right away, at his own expense, then he's an asshat, and you should pester the Police and Animal Control until something is done. Do any of your other neighbors have issues with the dog?

No, a .22 won't. Had 1st round of FMJ 9mm glance off skull of a Pit Bull, Powder Burn Point Blank. Pondering burial, poor Brad's pretty big peanut butter plopped beyond previously beaten path below. 2nd shot through eyeball did the trick.

There. I have used ten consecutive pairs of words starting with P and B, respectively, thereby achieving nirvana.

I guess I'll go for the 6 shooter 357. Hollow points or what? Wish I had some of those talon thingies that open up & rip the guts out. That Pit is so fast over the fence I will never get a shot off. Will try this weekend to replace bulb on porch light...

I recall back in the 70s, one of my friends dispatched a rather wild neighborhood dog by wrapping the muzzle of a shotgun with hamburger and offering the beast a "taste" through the fence. Not a way to maintain a low profile though.

You could make some Warfarin meatballs and toss them over the fence and wash them down with some Prestone. Quiet and effective.

Yea, a shot gun ready for when it jumps the fence would work. That's why they suggest one for home defense, one shot and you've hit the target and you don't risk a stray bullet going through walls etc. and nailing someone else. What could anyone say if you plugged it on your own property in self defense? That dog will eventually attack someone.

I would strongly suggest using a video camera in your own back yard to document how violent the dog is on the other side of the fence. Don't just send it to the animal control authorities, send it to the police and if they don't react, try the local media. Otherwise, if that dog gets loose and kills a little kid, then everyone's going to cry that they didn't know how dangerous it was.

Sorry , I am a long time Pitbull owher and have had several over the past 20 years. Please punish the deed not the breed. No pit is inherently mean. People train them to be aggressive. If you look at the american temperment test of the 202 dog breeds on planet earth on the chart pitbulls rank 116th most aggressive. Behind collies, golden retrievers, dachhounds and 113 other dogs. They are not all bad. I hate seeing people bash them as dogs, they are very loyal.

I would ask your neighbor to put him back on the chain or erect a taller fence.

Not much real advice so far....

I think Vector might be on to something. Maybe ask a friend who owns pitbulls or the local pitbull club for a bit of advice. Maybe even talk to the owner pitbull owner to pitbull owner.

Some homeowners insurance companies won't cover "bully breeds", I wonder if the neighbor's agent knows about the dog.

Thank you for posting that, saved me the time. I also have two pitbulls and they couldn't be more gentle or docile. The problem is the owner, not the dog. Pitbulls are very strong and fast dogs; that's sh**heads teach them to be aggressive.

As suggested, you need to make the owners do something to restrain him better. If they don't, call animal control. It would be incredible foolish to take matters into your own hands as you open yourself up to criminal charges and then followed by civil charges from the owners.

If I were you, I'd look up the local laws regarding bites and present that to the neighbors when you talk to them. Usually, when a dog is known to be aggressive, that opens the owners up to punitive damages in court. Punitive damages are not covered by home insurance; it really makes owners think twice about keeping or not restraining such an animal.
