Valentino Rossi is on the verge of clinching his fifth straight MotoGP title at Motegi in a three weeks time as rumours and reports from Italy, specifically La Repubblica suggest that the Italian star has signed a three year deal to join Ferrari in 2007 for an estimated 80 million Euros.

La Repubblica suggests that Rossi and Kimi Raikkonen will be the 2007 lineup for the once dominant champions.

There has been nothing official on this from Ferrari who just took up an option on the services of Felipe Massa to partner Michael Schumacher next year. Schumacher himself is under contract to the squad until the end of 2006 and according to reports, will await the first tests of the F2006 before making any decision as to whether he will remains with the team, move to pastures new, or retire from the sport.

The Rossi-Ferrari link is nothing new, but recent test with the teams seem to indicate the two parties are moving closer to a long- term working relationship and Rossi is believed to be conducting another two tests this year for Ferrari. His new contract with Yamaha is a one year extension and is up at the end of 2006.

Of course, a lot of Ferrari's 2007 lineup will depend on how competitive the team is next year and how well Felipe Massa performs alongside Schumacher. As it stands, Ferrari and tyre partner Bridgestone are between one and two seconds a lap off the pace at many Grand Prix. Should the team return to its winning ways in 2006, Raikkonen and Rossi may well be more inclined to make the move.

"3 year deal to join Ferrari in 2007 for an estimated 80 million Euros."

    Yeah, right...

Ferrari would be stupid to do that.

Yup, that's what people said about Tiger Wood's 1996 deal with Nike to pay him $40M over 5 years to endorse their products.

What were they thinking?? He'd just turned pro!!!

Titleist was was stupid too, they signed a $20M contract with him to endorse and use their products!

Never amounted to much did he?

Driving MotoGP and F1 are vastly different animals. Has he tested an F1 car ? this is not a step in situation.

Dave I agree completely given the modern bikes and cars, but there are historical examples of drivers/riders who have shown clear ability to do both including Surtees (champion in both sports) and Andretti (to my knowledge never competed on the bike but proved to be able to qualify mid-grid in numerous tests).

As we know the impact of F1 in the USA is totally not comparable with the situation here. I mean, you have nascar, cart and whatever more...

I guess with Rossi it's not a matter of being champ right away.
    How about $$$$$ ?
As far as I think these stiff F1 riders are a bunch of unreachable persons.
Any idea about the number of fans that Rossi has ?
They will follow him and that means spectators / viewers = $$$$.
And how about all the sponsormoney he brings ? The guy will make it all nicer.

The guy is as nutty as a fruitcake and a proven wonderboy.
And still there for the fans etc.
Remind he is used to high speeds and knows all the circuits etc.
He has been world champ in all classes like 6/7/8 times ?

And again, how would love the italians have one of their "own" in the car ?

But I am no expert and who am I to judge.... just share my thoughts.

Yeah, I don't really understand the idea of Rossi moving to F1 either. Its not like moving to a different class within your sport, this is moving to a different sport! Does he have experience racing cars? Especially single seaters?

Its like as if Michael Schumacher decides to move into MotoGP....

    ...or yacht racing.

...or Tiger Woods moving into baseball.

I just don't get what the hype is...

not quite...there is a fairly long history of two wheel racers transitioning into four wheel types.

surtees and hailwood are two worth mention.

I think I read some where that Rossi tested an F1 car in Fiorano and his pace was only 1 second behind MS so there is potential.
NMW, it would be interesting, wouldn't it?

I just read an article on a dutch F1 site. I will translate. It is from an article in Repubblica.

"I didn't ask them to test. They phoned me during my holidays and of course I didn't refuse. For them it was interesting how I could get along with the cars. I am not speculating about my future though".

"The test was not just as test, they grapped the matter very seriously. I've done more miles now. The engineers treated me like I was a real testpilot and used several gadgets te get their data. They adjusted the setup and wanted feedback about the behaviour of the car. Most of the time I gave them the right remarks. I've found out that it is very important to have the right setup. A driver can;t make that much difference, in comparisation with bike racing"

Rossi didn't give any numbers about the laptimes, neither Ferrari. "But I can say that they were good and that I can be fast in a F1 car also". He also mentioned that there are more tests to follow but not anymore at Fiorano, they want to check if he is fast at other circuits also

    (Repubblica, Big italian newspaper)

    Wel... what can I say..?
There are things going on or what ?

I have been saying for years, this guy is amazing.
He will be fast in a F1 car, and put it on the box, if not win, his first season in F1

    The comparison between Hailwood and Surtees came to mind as well BUT;
The gap between bikes and F1 cars is greater now than in the 60s. I know of drivers in the tube framed Formula Mazda that moved to the Carbon fiber FM and said it was a completly different world. And this is just a move up the ladder, not a different ladder.
One would think there would be more movement between bike drivers and formula cars considering their smaller physical size, race craft, and courage; all that seperates them from eternity is a layer of leather. As has been said "Fear is not a factor".
I hope this happens, he sounds like my kind of driver.
The only downside would be an Italian on the Ferrari team would make Imperial almost unbearable.
