I was thinking about this today and was wondering which ones y'all like! Isn't Randazzo's in Metarie open? I might have to swing by! What say you? (pic of large King Cake on Bourbon) Image Unavailable, Please Login
The best IMO was Avilasiti's (spelling?) on the northshore. They were in Cov. and then in Mandeville. I know they sold the place in Mandeville but I have no idea if they are still in business any longer. The owner was getting older and I heard he was starting to have health problems. I've been buying the ones they sell at P.J.'s but I don't like them too much. I think they are from Haydel's. I need to try some other places. I am going to get a Randazzo's cake next I think.
If I can't have an original Mckenzies King Cake I don't want one. Quoting Benny Grunch " Everybody cried, on the live Eyewitness News McKenzies got closed down, cause the sink was all mildewed. But, they opened up again, and while I was in line, they all closed down but I heard they gonna open one more time." Wade ( I miss it)
Wade, I have the solution to your problem. O'Delices pastry shop on Magazine St. has king cakes that taste JUST like the old McKenzie's cakes. I picked one up yesterday and it is virtually identical. It's on Magazine St.(coming from Downtown) all the way past Napoleon, maybe even past Jefferson on the right hand side. I want to say its in the 4900 or 5000 block. McKenzie's had my favorite king cakes as well
What was the place on Vets that had them, was it Maurices, no, . Don't remember, but last year my mother sent me a few from a place on Vets, down from Benson MB. They had bought hte receipe for the Mckenzies King Cake. It could have been Randazzos, No I remember. Taste Doughnuts bought the recipe. but you could only get like a 12inch cake. I remember a few years ago when they adverstised it for hte first time. I had to put in an order 3 days in advance. I need to call Mom. Wade O'Delices pastry shop on Magazine St Yep Been there, they are dynomite, but nothing like a King Cake and some Buttermilk drops. We use to hit the Old McKenzies on Airline and Severn all the time when I was a kid.
