    Hello,

I usually post in the North Midwest section since I spend most of my time in Iowa and Minnesota. One of my favorite things to do is taking roadtrips and Google Earth is great for planning them. Using it I saw some roads around Kirksville, that looked like fun. If you have a favorite road in the area please post it. If you know of any notorious speed traps, that would be useful information as well.

The trip should happen sometime in the next two weeks. I will be bringing my video camera. If you are in the area and would like to run some roads with me it would be fun to take some rolling video. They are great to watch in the winter when the snow is flying.

I look forward to hearing from all of you.

I didn't think anyone went to Kirksville on purpose!

Actually, I graduated medical school there (KCOM). I remember a great road by the golf course near the south end of town. I also remember a speed trap in there, so be careful.

My info is about a dozen years old, but most folks who attended either KCOM or Truman State (which in my day was called NMSU) got tickets between Kirksville and Jeff City. Notorious speed trap.

Have a blast. I'll be looking for the pics.

Oh yeah. Stop by the campus at Truman if you get the chance. Some of the best looking women I've ever seen go there. It's where I met my wife.

Thanks for the tip DrC. Well crafted response. I got a laugh out of the first part. However you must keep in mind that I will be fleeing Iowa.

This is a link to a map with my proposed travel routing.

The map makers have straightened the lines for simplicity. About a mile south of the Iowa border the roads become fairly curvy. Hopefully there is enough entertainment value to warrant driving for two hours to get there.

My work ocassionally takes me to Kirksville. Not a bad overnight trip. Be careful on 63 between Kville and Columbia if you go further south. There are alot of wild twisty fun roads up there. I don't have to to tell you (being from IA) to watch out for the Amish horse drawn buggies that suddenly appear and also the large farm implements that take up both sides of the road. There shouldn't be anything other than hay being harvested right now, so watch for haywagons and old farm trucks driving at 30-45 mph.

I can't remember any restaurants that burned an impression on my mind. Bring some cash bond $$$ as you are from out of state and could be required to post a bond if you are stopped for excessive speed. Your license could also be held in lieu. Also a new law in MO, if you come upon a police car with his E lights on, the side of the road, you must move over a lane.

Enjoy your trip and be safe.

CFCARRIAGE, point taken. :) I have considered the effects of having the wrong state on my plates. I was recently tailed for several miles by a Minnesota police officer who played a game of cat and mouse with me. It was uncomfortable but he eventually left me alone.

I like to have fun with the car but I reserve truly aggressive driving for the track. One moving violation could have a detrimental effect upon my career.

This may sound funny, but I bought a static cling Dale Earnhardt number 3 to put on my rear window for the trip. Last year one of my roadtrips took me through northeastern Iowa. I stopped for gas in a small (hick) town and thought that "I was gonna die". Three jacked up trucks covered in mud were loitering in the parking lot. There were two to three guys around each one who looked at me and my car with eyes locked, and arms crossed. To an observer it may have seemed like I had just come from outer space and landed on their favorite dog. :) A #3 on my window might have diverted some of the negative attention. No self-respecting redneck would hassle a Dale Sr. fan. (Which I legitimately was). It just wouldn't be right.

That route brings back memories. Right after my wife (then my girlfriend) and I started dating, she took a job in West Des Moines. I literally drove from Kirksville to Iowa every weekend until I moved to Jeff City, and I still kept it up for two and a half years - every single weekend!

There are some great twisties right south of the border. Have a blast!

My trip has been delayed until September 27th, (28th if the weather is bad on the 27th) due to work and other reasons.

If you are going to be around and want to be in the driving video that I will be making let me know. Winter will be here before you know it and a video of a good drive helps lighten the gray days when you can't be outside.
