During the past 2 years, my mom (75 yrs. old) has had both knees done. One was done October 2004, the next was done October 2005.
She is a fairly physical person, takes regular walks, does everything on her own, etc., and is in good/average shape for her age, perhaps a bit overweight.
Both times, it has taken her 6 months to get totally back to 'normal'; no pain, no 'muscle tightness', back to doing 100% of her activities (albeit without the previous knee pain she was experiencing).
Physical therapy post surgery (outpatient) at the hospital 2 times a week for 4-6 weeks; of course I'm sure this depends on the individual. Specific exercises on her own, at home, for another 4-6 weeks or so. From time to time she will still do the exercises.
She was in the hospital 4 days or so each time and they started physical therapy a day or two after her surgery.
She does not regret having the surgery at all.

I hav two friends with knee replacements. Both of them are same as Marq's description. One was 67 years old for first knee and 69 for second knee. The other person was 61. No regrets anywhere.

While Italian knee prosthetics might be faster and have more nimble manueverability, I'd go with a more robust and engineered German knee. Japanese knees might last forever, but they're a little tight on space.

Several of my employees have had knees and hips recently. Knees seem to be about a 3 month heal time and 6-9 months in PT. According to these sources there is pain in recovery, however it fades and is less bothersome that the artheritis that was causing their problems before. One of my guys that had a knee done in 2004 is getting the other done in November of this year.

I have a good friend who is a Ortho (didn't do any of my employees surgeries) and he says that these operations have about a 98 percent sucess rate....however he also says that you DON'T want to be in the 2 percent.

Zimmer also makes a good products for joint replacement. I might be able to get you more info if needed. PM me if you want.

When I was a kid I use to watch the surgery videos of knee and hip replacements. What a trip that was.

My mother had her's done a year ago x-mass. While the first few weeks are rough...it was the best thing she ever did. On of our best friends was a rep for Stryker in NYC, and was always in the OR durring the procedure. The Stryker product is one of the best. In addition, the BEST place to have it is in NYC at Hospital for Special Surgery. My mother's room was next to Bob Dole's where he was getting his second hip done. If you want to go to HSS I will give you the Dr's info, as he is the Chief of Replacement Surgery.
