Took the Diablo out for a beautiful long drive yesterday. Did 200miles under the clear sky. Car runs perfect, pulls great and is massiv fun. HOWEVER.

On my way back home I started hearing a knocking/pinging sound as I accelerate. Its a really wird sound, as it does not follow rpms perfectly, its like a "ping pong ball bounching of a table" sound". It comes when I accelerate, and is not there when you cruise. The sound comes from somewhere af the rear of the car I belive, maybe the right side, but its hard to really locate.

The gears shift fine, runs strong and great.

I took the car out this morning again, and at first the sound was not there. After about 10min of driving the sound came on again.

    Any ideas here?

    Car is a 93´2wd. 16000km

Could it be you got a bad load of gas, maybe you bought high test but it was really regular unleaded, and its pinging under acceleration.?

I am pretty sure its not engine related. Engine runs smooth and strong at all rpms.

The noise really is a knocking sound. Sounds like ping pong ball jumping on a table.

    Dear Lamborghinisti,

I thought the "knock " sensors would retard the timing to compensate. Because the sound only comes on acceleration.... I'm leaning with Champ. Try some new gas and add some Chevron Techtron fuel additive.

    Let us know....

As I stated i #1 and #2 post, the engine is running smooth and pulls great, so thats not the problem. Any timing or fuel knocking noise or pinging would also result in some kind of performance/smoothness/driveability loss.

ANYWAY, I belive I found the problem.

The inner CV joint on the RH driveshaft has a punctured boot. The joint has dried up, and lacks grease. You can actully see all the dried out grease on the outside of the joint as dust.
I moved the shaft back and forth (no pun intended), and that moved the grease out, (again... no pun intended). The sound disapered after I did this, as the joint now had some grease.
Anyway, I need to remove the joint when time allows it to inspect, and find a replacment or rebuild the joint.

Anybody know a good place that rebuild CV joints?

This could be the source of the noise. I'm surprised it's loud enough to be heard above the sound of the engine.

Not a very difficult job to replace the CV joint. You're too far away for me to recommend anyone.
