This weekend I had occasion to drive on US route 84 for a really long stretch, both directions, between Brownwood, Texas (central texas) to where it intersects I-45 south of DFW. If I remember correctly, the easternmost part of that road might have been a part of a Poker Run or Spring Run at some point.

The road had no construction, I saw no speed traps, it was pretty scenery and the road surfaces were fantasic throughout the stretch I drove. Not much traffic and plenty of passing lanes.

It's a great road to stretch the legs of your machine and perform an Italian Tune Up. Not much twisty but fair amount of elevation change.

My favorite SW of Fort Worth:

FM 917 Egan to Joshua (either way)
    (close to Fort Worth)

FM 927 Iredell to Walnut Springs (either way)
(stop at Hammond's BBQ in Glen Rose for lunch)
(try Loco Coyote restaurant west of Glen Rose
    Loco Coyote Grill - Menus)

Park Road 21 (loop off HWY 67) west of Cleburne (either way)
    (caution going past lime plant)
(drive through Cleburne State Park is nice @ $5.00)

    HWY 6 Hico to Iredell
(straight but fun - then do FM 927)

from Hwy 220 (north of Hico) at HWY 67 back to Glen Rose on HWY 67
(good hwy with great vista going east bound)

When we're in need of a quick fix, we go North to Celina and run 455 between Celina and 75. Then we turn around and go back.

We've had MANY DFW runs on that road, and it's still good. We usually do it early on a Saturday or Sunday morning.

FM 933 between Blum and Whitney. Straight and hilly road with a few curves. Good road surface. Most of the time no cops, but there is the occasional DPS or sheriff car tucked behind some bushes.

Hwy 385 between Ft. Stockton and Marathon. Awesome! Watch for mule deer. Also, Hwy 285 between Ft. Stockton and Sanderson. This is the road the Big Bend Open Road Race is raced on.

Believe it not, there are some great drives around Houston. But, and this is a big one, the radical bicyclists have ruined them. What kind of knucklehead rides two abreast going into a blind corner on a two-lane country road through the trees?

It's best to take it to the track.

FM 56 around the west side of Lake Whitney is a good road I just drove on this morning. Lots of straights, quite a few bends and curves, lots of elevation change, and the scenery is quite good.

Road surface was good, however there were some sections of recently paved road with no stripe. Very little traffic. There is one spot where it drops down to 50, and I saw a Bosque County sheriff shooting radar at a gas station. Other than that one part, no cops.

    Kevin.

I always enjoy drives in that area southwest of Fort Worth. The scenery is more like Hill Country than east Texas. The roads are typically good and not very busy. I used to do timed road rallies in that area with the Great Race group out of Granbury. We also, used the roads around Granbury. Good places there, too.

    Have a great day.

might be already here, but got to drive on a couple of awesome roads this weekend:

CoTA to TWS, especially on Hwy 21 from Bastrop to Bryan. wide open, some nice scenery. changes in elevation. some big bugs, but nothing a good wash won't take care of...most importantly, no cops!

also, beautiful and mixed scenery from Lake Travis to south Austin... although more traffic and signals as well.

Thanks, I toured these roads Saturday on my sport bike. Been on 455 a few times, 697 was a nice addition. Spotted a DPS unit on 455, rolling East.

    FORT WORTH TO POSSUM KINGDOM

Earlier this month I had an opportunity to try this one out, and it was SPECTACULAR! Checking out the local history on U.S. 180, and the twisties over the Brazos near Possum Kingdom Lake - it is the perfect weekend ride! It takes about 4.5 hours, over a 201 mile route. Here's the itinerary, try it out! - Chuck McClelland, BMW Motorcycles of Fort Worth
    1. Start at S 287 and 1187 in Mansfield, Go West on 1187 until you reach Aledo
    2. In Aledo, where 1187 meets WFM 5, Follow WFM until it intersects Old Bankhead HWY
    3. Go West on Old Bankhead Hwy until it merges with US 180. Follow US 180 all the way to Palo Pinto
    4. In the town of Brad, turn right (Go North) on 16
    5. When you get toward Possum Kingdom Lake, turn left (West) on 2353. When you get to 16 again, turn right (East)
    6. Stay on 16 Southbound until you get to the fork, then merge left on 254. This will take you through Graford.
    7. At 254 and US 281, Go left (North) on US 281 towards Perrin. In Perrin turn right (East) on 2210/E Hackley Street
    8. 2210 will intersect with 199. Go right (Southeast) on 199. This will take you by Eagle Mountain Lake
    9. Merge Left onto 820 East bound towards North Richland Hills. Welcome back to town!

Perhaps one to avoid... Had the 911 out for a Sunday drive. Chose FM 407 west of I35W as I wanted to avoid rain up towards TX/OK border. Roads in/around Justin stink, bottomed the Porker out once going all of 20 mph. Lots of roadwork/tar, which I gotta now clean off. Smokies & pokies everywhere. Poorly signed, so I never knew how much I was going over/under the speed limit. Grrr!!...T

922 from I-35/Valley View to Forestburg, then back to I-35 via 455 to Sanger. 455 continues on to Pilot Point, if you have the time.
