    He said it's for weight savings and space saving compared to other ways in his video with JWW. The carbon tank weighs 2kg excluding what he describes as a small electric motor to compress air into it and small valves. About the 12 minute mark in the video.

    The energy stored in the form of compressed air (mechanical energy) is pretty light and can be discharged rapidly to provide what the turbo needs. Having to do that using big enough electric motors to spool the turbines (2 of them) AND a battery to store the energy to rapidly discharge to spin them would weigh a lot. The small electric compressor on the air tank is light and more like a trickle charger, but mechanical version. Slowly fills it up not putting lots of sudden/large load on the car, but will build up stored energy to rapidly discharge later.
