Koni Shock Coilover Spring Removal

    I think I may have posted this before but could not find the thread.
    When I did my rear shocks, there was a suspension place in town that had a wall mounted device that had a lever. You put the shock on the device and it squeezed the coil down so you could remove the seat and retainer clips. I took pieces of cardboard to rest on the area where the shock sat. I did not harm or scratch the spring or shock in any way. The place went out of business and I cannot find a picture on the internet or talked to anyone who has seen one of these.

    All the ones for sale now have horrible grips which grab the coil itself, which is not what I want after painting my springs. I was hoping one of you know of the brand or have a photo of one of these machines. I called about 5 local shops and they acted like they had never seen this device.

    Thanks in advance for any suggestions or advice. BTW I have one of the crude devices to grap the springs and destroy the paint.....

    Actually no that grabs the springs, not the flats there are a few off those in town, this was a much simpler device and looked like this but much heavier. There are many out there but look like they were designed for macpherson struts not eh coil over design. This one I would buy not sure if it could take the load?

    The other two also look like for Macpherson struts and have that ridge which is great for grabbing a loose spring but not the flats of the Koni shock???

    You might check with Koni USA for help. They may have a company they work with that offers what your looking for. It may just be made for Koni only.

    I do my shocks in a hydraulic press with plastic pieces I made up for them. Won't scratch them and is pretty stout for spring removal.

    I cut an empty plastic milk jug into strips and wrapped my springs at the point where the spring compressor made contact so that there were mutiple layers of plastic protecting the spring. I also massaged the surface of the hook of the compressor to make sure there the contact area was smooth. There was no resulting damage to the spring finish.

    That all sounds good but this machine squeezed the spring off in less than 10 seconds by hand, no tools no wrenches and then left no marks see my original pic. I cant have been the only one in existence ???

    I just use a hydraulic press to do mine. Very quick and easy.

    The draper one has the ridges for holding the springs and i think is mainly for struts, for the Koni coil-over the areas have to be flat. I have a large press, does anyone have some pictures of how they would use it to get the spring off.

    It seems the safest way would be pressing the down the way it is in the car, but that would make it hard to reinstall the retainer clips. If you press upsde down then you would need some kind of u shaped steel design that would press down the retaining perch but leave room from both side to inserts the cir clips?

    A small dab of grease can be used to hold the retainer clips in their grooves.
