nasty crash. evidently he went into a crash area and a metal piece penetrated the driver side of the car Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
I reckon that might be the case as a no.2 driver .. but unfortunately neither Petrov or Senna are no.1 drivers & that's what they will need to remain competitive
Blick reports he crashed into a church. The difference between these and Senna is, that they have been quick and can get there again.
I read about the church too. Something about either going off or into a guard rail as well. Very true regarding the other two 'getting there' again. Who know, maybe we'll all be surprised by Senna. Either way, I hope Renault is a front runner.
motorsport aktuell talks about them hitting the armco and the armco actually penetrating the car and injuring Kubica. It took the firemen an hour to get him out of the wreck and now he is (all this allegedly) in an induced coma while being operated on the hand.
Damn, what an unfortunate accident. Best wishes to Kubica and my thoughts are with his family, friends, and teammates. Amazing to think he was nearly unscathed in the accident at Canada in '07, but suffers devastating injuries here. A true testament to the safety of F1 cars and the track environment these days. Get well Robert.
Even if he would be the best replacement, Kimi is out of F1 for good. Problem is, I can't think of anyone that would be equal to Kimi or Robert. Sure Heidfeld is good so is Hulkenberg, but the first is not "superstar" material and the other is simply not ready yet to be one. That's what happens when paying pilots outnumber talented ones, we run out of choices.
Whatever he hit, it seems to me it was unforgiving. Steering wheel probably did the damage to his hand, at this stage with the slighty uncertain reports I cannot see him behind the F1 wheel this year. Hope he can though, a great driver one of the best, will be sorely missed.
I think there isn't anybody as good as Kubica to replace him with. But I'm sure there are plenty of drivers out there better than Senna. Just start looking in GP2 and other levels of motorsport. Whatever happened to those Italian "kids" who tested for Ferrari and set the track on fire with their laptimes?
update: Kubica update: surgery set to finish at 8pm CET. No amputation of hand, but too soon to judge on functionality. http://twitter.com/NobleF1/statuses/34280365636059136
Per various tweets: Kubica will not lose the hand, but functionality of it is uncertain. He is still in surgery.
At least that is some slighty better news, I just read that Robert suffered a serious arm injury in 2003 when he was the passenger in a serious road accident. He had 18 titanium bolts fitted into his arm but returned to racing quickly and won his first race.
If the metacarpals were crushed in this loss, the big thing will be keeping the thing clean after and removing all the dead tissue during surgery. Inadequate debridement and/or leaving a dead space which fills with fluid and detritus behind the flexor tendons leads on to infection, devascularisation of the fingers and amputation. I hope not, but 'crushed hand' is a really rough one.
In reference to other post about drivers racing in outside series I agree that it should not be allowed while under contract, F1 is their bread and butter not just a part-time job. Hopefully this incident will bring a stop to it sooner rather than later. RK's injuries I hate to say may end his F1 career and I'm a fan of his, sad news indeed.
I'm further hearing that he passed out and woke up several times unsure regarding what took place. This sort of thing is very common in losses, particularly massive auto losses (I review and defend massive auto losses for a living) so thankfully Robert will probably have no memory regarding what took place. I am sure his own personal aftermath on himself will be devastating as someone said early. Poor guy.
Truly sad news. Speedy recovery to Robert Kubica and I pray we will see him in an F1 car in the future. He will truly be missed in the meantime. Alex
These guys are adrenaline junkies and accidents can happen anywhere: Playing soccer, skiing, snow mobiling, motor cycles, bikes, race cars, street cars, powerboats, helicopter and plane flying. Hard to put a stop to all of that.
+1 Maybe allowing an offseason testing program(starting sooner than February 1)would cut down on drivers doing 'outside activities? Allowing them to get their adrenaline rush. Just an idea. Alex
Wow. This sucks. Interesting that the media is saying the accident occurred while Kubes was on his way to the start of the Rally, not actually on-stage at the time of the accident. That would mean this is a road accident, not a rallying accident. Crappy way for one of the brightest up and coming drivers to end a career.
I just read through this thread. I can't believe it. Here's to the happy day when he returns to driving F1 again.
