No shock there. Senna just wasn't what they were looking for. In Kubica's absence, they really need someone consistent and likely to score points if possible. Mark
+2 I did actually think of him soon after reading the initial report of the mishap with Robert. Nick just might surprise a few people this year. Petrov will have his work cut out for him again this year.
Not sure how much Kubica would appreciate this (not you being nostalgic, but Heidi as a team mate). In fact I've been thinking about this for a while now: What cruel irony that Heidi takes his seat after his accident. In his last year at Sauber the team was treating Kubica badly, they dropped the ball on him and favored Heidfeld big time, which is why he was able to match Kubica in the results. Had the team focused on Kubica, the results would have been very different. And now "the golden haired child" inherits the to-date-best seat in his F1 career. Karma can be such a <rhimes with witch>
Some stats for ya.. Heidfeld has started 172 races over the last 11 seasons. He has finished second on eight occasions...
And your point is? Coming in 2nd once a year is an accomplishment? Kubica's stats: 76 races 12 podiums 1 win
+1 At least they realized that Grosjean/Liuzzi/Senna are not the answer. What speaks for Heidfeld is his experience. They already got one crash'n'burn driver on their payroll.
Would have been better off with Heidi for his experience and Hulk for speed, ditch Petrov. But then there's the minor problem of no money...
He got the seat. Id say he impressed Renault. Kubica supposedly said he wanted Liuzzi to have the seat. Id say Nicks record trumps that. Clearly his experiences gained him the seat even finishing second. Not bad for finishing second. He is in F1 for another full season. Plenty of other drivers are not.
I agree. Heidi isn't a bad choice per se, I just can't rate him incredibly high. He's always done just enough not to get kicked out of a team (until after sauber), never anything more IMO. Eleventybillion races done by him, STILL no wins, rare podiums. Something tells me his developing skills aren't the greatest. Well, he DID keep Alonso at bay at the Abu Dhabi GP, much to the dismay of Alonso and Alonso worshippers...
Nothing shocking that Bruno didn't get the seat. Nick deserves it. I'm glad he got it and hope he does well.
Agreed, but he is indirectly associated with Mercedes now. I am sure Mercedes is looking at him for a potential replacement for MS if things dont workout.
