My L series ashtray, smaller than the following M & E, has a hole where some identity crisis person drilled a hole right in the middle for some emblem. The lid is magnetic, so I assume not stainless steel. Is it steel with chrome? I need to know as have to send it to the appropriate place, have the hole welded and refinish the complete unit. If anyone knows, please chime in. Thank you. Regards, Alberto Image Unavailable, Please Login
Hi Alberto, Check it with a magnet, stainless is non-magnetic. I would bet that the ashtray is chrome plated steel, you need to remove the chrome before welding. It would be easy to tig weld the hole up then re-chrome. If it is stainless you just need to tig weld it with stainless, sand and polish. Steve
Guys, turns out mine is the later style. I will send pix later today, but I'm 99% sure it's not the style you want. Dave
Thank you Dave, it was worth the shot. I did send mine to have refinished. End of problem. Regards, Alberto
Or so I thought... I received the de-holed ashtray from Precision Plating, and very happy with results. But, and here comes reality, as the ashtray can was also rusted (of course), when it returned, one of the springs broke off as frozen solid to it, and as is the other spring. I can safely bet, this has not happened to anyone. I refuse to believe it. Any thoughts on remaking a spring or something similar that will maintain the ashtray in place? Thank you. Regards, Alberto PS. I am aware that the can should not be chromed, but that's the way it is. Image Unavailable, Please Login
