I'm considering changing out all of the old suspension bushings on my 1980Ser.1400i #28903 with none of the hydrolic rear shocks..My question is..(approximately) how many man -hours would an experienced mechanic/shop expect to encounter..I mean one that has done this very proceedure before..I'm not at all interested in some clown learning o.j.t...at my expense..we've ALL been to that BBQ..thank you all sooo much for your help in this matter..Jacques.

This clown (me) couldn't get the rear inner upper and lowers without removing the rear dif and torque tube and everything else.

One of the 400i cars that I looked at in 1998 had lots of records from Intrepid Motors in Reno, NV, a fairly well-known shop owned by Bert Skidmore.

Here are the labor hours he charged for a front suspension rebuild:

Remove front control arms, shocks and rotors: 4.5 hours

Remove control arm bushings and ball joints, replace with new parts: 3.5 hours

Install shocks, R&R springs, control arm bushings, pack front wheel bearings: 6.5 hours

So it looks basically like 14.5 hours for the front end. Not sure what the rear end would be.

I did the front bushing on my 1982 400i two springs ago. It took me after work for a couple weeks. Call it eight days at about two and half hours a stint for 20 hours. -steve

When you replaced your bushings, where did you buy them and do you still have the old ones..If you do, I think that I can source after-market ones in both rubber and poly if you could spare a set of the old ones so that I can mic them with my source..this may be of help to others in future...I have
the time and would be happy to do this for other parts as well... both front an rear sets would help..I hope that this would be of some value...research really is my "long-suit"..thanks Jacques.

My old bushings were really bad--Not recoverable. Replacements came from
    T. Rutland at what I recall was an acceptable price. -steve

Lower bushings are pretty conventional in front and rear and might be replaceable with poly or custom made with rubber. Actually the lowers are not well made as the center sleeve is just flared to hold the end washers on. They can pop off if not installed carefully.

The front uppers are quite special. They are virtually all metal with both rotational "bearings" and thrust plate. There is no rubber give to be improved upon. The entire assembly does not need to be replaced when worn, actually only one part wears plus the two rubber dust seals. My thrust washers were still good but since I ordered them I replace them and kept the old ones.
