I recently had a suspension warning light on my 06 F430 Spider. The dealer diagnosed that an ECU had failed, swapped a part from another car to confirm that diagnosis, ordered the part and fitted it.

Does anyone know what a reasonable labour charge would be for this work? I was charged for 10 hours work, which seems a lot to me given that the ECU is in the passenger footwell..

AFAIK the ECUs need to be programmed to the car and that is the expensive part.

    Sounds a lot.

The Suspension ECU is not coded to the car.

It is located in the passenger compartment, under the dashboard, and is fastened to the chassis on the left-hand side of the evaporator unit. To remove it, just its wiring loom connector must be detached and the two nuts fastening it to the supporting bracket must be unscrewed. That's it!

Just like on the 360 a Self-diagnosis of the operation of the shock absorber damping ECU can be checked on the SD3 tester.

I'd have words about what that 10 hours was really for, diagnostics (manually) perhaps?

.. because you can whip out that ECU and swap it in just a few minutes!

Finally just to give you an overview of the Suspension System. Problems that can occur are basically going to come down to just a few items...

    a) Acceleration Sensor faulty - Warning light on dash triggered
    b) Faulty shock absorber (1 of 4) - Warning light on dash triggered
    c) Faulty ecu - Warning light on dash triggered
    d) Loose or cut wiring looms - Warning light on dash triggered
    e) Faulty brake pedal switch - Warning light on dash triggered

    SDx will tell you what it is. If it doesn't there aren't that many parts to the system to manually check for;

    ---
    1. [Purple Circles], these are the connectors (2 wires) which plug in each Electronic Shock absorber (1 per wheel).
    2. [Yellow Circle], the suspension computer itself which is triggering the fault because of an issue its detected
    3. [Red Circle]. Side Acceleration Sensor, its behind the front bumper next to the washer fluid tank.
    4. [Red Circle]. Vertical, front and rear acceleration sensors
    5. Brake pedal switch
    6. Failure signal on instrument panel multi-function display.
    7. Race selection switch on side instrument panel.
    ---

Pic is of a 360 but the F430 system (while using a different ecu with revised software) is essentially very similar and shares the same dampers.

So... How hard do you think this must be to diagnose? (even without the help of an SD2 [because say the ECU is toast] you can check the dampers signal relatively easily with a multimeter).

Thanks guys. You have confirmed what I thought. My work was done by a main Ferrari dealer, so they have all the necessary computers and I can't see 10 hours work. I will discuss it with them...

By the way, in the UK the price of the part was OK - £500 new from a main agent seems OK to me

2 hours, if they drank 4 espressos and ate doughnuts. This should be a piece of cake for the dealer to figure out.

Another example of the dealer taking advantage of an unsuspecting owner.

I wonder what the book time is.
