Does anyone know where I could have a lacquer-based paint (custom color) mixed to spray on leather? The lacquer based products for leather and vinyl available in spray cans from the average auto parts store (molecubond) are far superior to the Leathereque product in durability but I can’t find anyone that knows the formula for leather. The paint auto paint shop can mix but I know that the paint that is used for leather is different.

    Sue,
You really don't want to use a lacquer based dye. It seals the leather & prevents conditioners from reaching it. Result is that in a few years it becomes hard & brittle.

That's why Conolly & the other leather companies stopped using it in the late '80s.

The leatherique dye holds up quite well. I drive about 3000 miles/year, & have only touched up my dye on the driver's seat about every 3rd year when it began to look a little thin. Haven't needed to touch up the passenger seat, or rest of the leather since initial redye back in '01 or '02.

Thanks for the input. I have used the leathereque on a 308 interier refurb and I was not pleased with the durability. The solvent based Molecubond in black worked very well for the black parts (steering wheel) and was extremely durable. I am looking for that type of product but in a color they do not produce.

www.croftgate.co.uk, They not only manufacture a similar product to leatherique but also still make the lacquer based products mixed to the colour You want. they're also suppliers to Mercedes, Jaguar & Bentley amongst others, I've used their products on many cars with good results for both finish and wear

Thank you! I did not see on the site where it said it was not water based. Which product have you used?

    Sue,
We pretty much use all their products (but the lacquer based product I have in front of me is just labled "croftgate leather dye",
In your case I'd send them an e-mail explaining what you want to acheive and they'll get back to you with a list of what you need (they wont be around until Tuesday due to the holidays)

Unless its a standard colour (ie black) you'll probably need to send them a small sample of which colour you want

Outstanding, Thanks again. I have posted requests for this info before and I have never gotten any worthy responses.

He did my interior and uses exactly what you are looking for.
Have not spoke to him lately - after the Katrina storm thing...
