Really a shame. A LaF Spider made to your spec would look stunning. +1 Probably this: McLaren Begins Work On Limited-Run P1 Carbon Series
Dont understand this carbon edition at all. Dont all p1s have cf body panels? If so, what is factory offering for $200k retrofit? Same thing with clear coat instead of colored paint? Seems ridiculous to me
I believe its tinted raw carbon fibre weave panels with clear applied. Service centres can take off the existing painted body panels and the owner can have these fitted instead. Its looks beautiful on the Pagani's but the P1's don't really pull it off well IMO. Certainly not cheap given all the costs involved.
Absolutely. That's absolutely not a different version of the p1.. just a way to empty the pockets of some rich fools
P1 body is already CF and I believe it was always known that in the future you'd be able to get a CF body if you wanted one, but you had to wait since they wanted to get all the cars done first. It just probably takes a ton of time since it requires matching all the weaves.
It seems more and more to Me that McLaren's SOP for customers is : Step 1): Spec and order your car Step 2): Collect your car Step 3): Return your car back to the dealer/factory months later and we'll make it the car it should have been in the first place/ or a special edition version (if you're prepared to spend hundreds of thousands of additional cash on replacement parts that do the exact same job as your original parts did!) Wouldn't it make more sense spending a bit more time to get the cars right in the first place?
From what P1 owners tell me, the car needs to visit the factory fairly regularly. Reliability is apparently not included in the spec and isn't an option either...
Well, to be fair - I have almost 2k miles on my P1 including roadcourse and drag strip, and it has had zero (nada, none) problems. Then again I can say the same of our LaFerrari. It's a great time to be a supercar owner!
Just heard from dealer that it will be 80, from a dealer who sold one, as not all dealers have one to offer.
First 150, now 80... wait, 70? I have no connections whatsoever but to the final official figure you want to take, simply add the unofficial 10-15% more as always...
Not really. Bare CF was just not an option at the time and they probably would have charged you an arm and a leg for it even if it was. It's not the CF body that's so expensive, it's the time it takes for them to lay it out perfectly. I imagine a tailor made bare CF LF worked cost 100s of thousands too considering just custom paint can be $40k.
I visited Ferrari factory three weeks ago meeting several persons who are in charge of logistics of chassis related parts as we are wheel supplier to Ferrari. During the meeting I asked the number of LaFerrari spider to be produced and they answered 150.
Exactly. CF fabric and epoxy are cheap. But the skill and time required to make it smooth and nicely angled around curves and edges is exponentially more than laying up a part in CF and painting it. You're dead on, to make a car's worth of CF panels that looks good when unpainted can easily run hundreds of thousands, but especially with the details of the P1. (I spent nearly 2 years in the early 00s trying to get larger scale fabrication of 360/430 and 550/575 body panels to do entire rebodies - I met with several potential investors and both drove and flew around the country trying to put that deal together but it fizzled)
Interesting. Let's see who are the most informed (or more honest in sharing info): the guys who actually sold a car to a client and probably sharing the info with the client buying it, or the guys doing parts who hear from others who heard that....
@ ryalex Ryan this is off topic but I just wanted to say I love the color of the Ferrari in your Avatar. Did that car ever exist because that color is phenomenal.
We deal directly with the procurement department of Ferrari and these people who are in charge of logistics belong to procurement department and their function is to monitor and make sure the parts will be shipped to the warehouse on schedule. If these guys don't know the actual number of the limited edition models, how does Ferrari deal with suppliers to provide the parts with correct quantity?
I have no stake in the game. So I don't care who is right or to be right myself. Now, for the sake of the argument, it is likely that most parts used on the LF Spider come from the LF coupe, it is possible that the people you deal with don't deal with all the parts specific with that particular model, it is mostly certain that the vast majority of Ferrari employees, while they know some special, like a LaFerrari Spider is coming, are not being communicated the information Ferrari wants to keep secret until they publicly release the information. The number of 150 has been the number "publicly" discussed for months in the circles having interest in those things. Not necessarily in the circles who know for a fact. Would not be the first "wrong accredited" info we all believe in. My bet is on 70 though. It is actually a great thing to make it 70 (I can afford one, nor would be offered one, so it looks even more exceptional to my eyes).
Thanks, but it's only a Photoshop of an auction listing photo I found years ago. I'd say an azzurro California 288 is still on my list of life goals, although they are now so crazy expensive. They were $300-400k when I was first interested in them. This one used to be my profile picture, it's a shop of a silver 288 that IIRC was owned in Mexico. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Sorry, but I no longer believe this. Unlike the days of the 599 GTO, now Ferrari are a listed company if they say the run is 150, it will be 150, they simply cannot afford to do otherwise.
