I was considering a Lambo Gallardo and have been reviewing the resale. What's up with the bad resale? If the car is so good, why doesn't it reflect in the resale. I have a good deal workng on a trade and would love to do it, but I'm concern about being left with a lemon. Please tell me why I am wrong about my concerns.

I think the resale is bad only compared to one type of car: the 360/430. It's pretty good compared to everything else IMO.

Ditto. Look at other $100k+ cars and how they depreciate. You will loose 30-40k in ONE YEAR on a new SL65 for example.

That's why you buy one a year old with a few miles. Or one that's three months old with 453 miles. :D

As far as a merc, generally it seems like the kind of person who wants a high end, high dollar mercedes benz / beemer / whatever wants to buy it new.

You haven't seen the worst of it, notice how many there are on E-bay now with 2004's coming off 2 year leases, and warranty expiration. Should be a buyers market

I think we're just seeing Econ 101 in action -- the supply far exceeds the demand.

btw, I think the demand side of the equation would perk up significantly if they would come out with a 3000 pound RWD Gallardo.

I did that on a sl600 and I'm not buying another one. I'm a little surprised about the G's resale values and I think it's just supply and demand.

I don't find the resale too bad. It seems to stronger now than it was 4 months ago. Of course it will still drop. Part of the reason for the drop is that a lot of people that buy G's put miles on them. For instance a few months I looked at a 04 Gallardo not in a popular color with 9k miles on in that sold around 130k This car was about 170k new sticker maybe the guy paid 160k. So it dropped about 40k in almost two years, 30k if he paid 160k. If you bought a 2005 blue 430 spider for 300k (90 over sticker) and put 9k miles on it I don't think you could sell it for 260k this comming January. Of course the 430 resale value is good compared to sticker but who except the chosen few gets to buy at sticker? I don't think you are going to see them drop too much more soon because what else are you going to buy if you can only get 100-110k for your Gallardo? I suppose this could change if something starts popping up on these cars that cost big bucks to fix. My laymans 2 cents.

I did the new car thing with my last car. I got that out of my system! Now I only consider cars that have taken their depreciation hit (ala Millionaire Next Door).

It also depend what part of the depreciation curve you are looking at. For the money you would spend on an 04 G you could also get an 02 360. I would guess that both of these cars will see roughly the same depreciation over the next few years.

Roy Cats has a good pulse of the market and he has seen G prices firming up over the last couple months if not rising.

Look for a low mile car with some good options and you'll do fine. It will not depreciate that much. Most of those E-bay cars have stories behind them with the exception of a few. If your interested my '04 G is for sale and has 10 months left on the factory warranty. Its a loaded car with 5k miles on it. New tires and just has a oil and air filter service.

When they build as many "G"s as they have you should expect that the depreciation will be significant. A lot of choices for buyers ( just look at Ebay). Also Audi introduces more desireable versions of the car with improvements and that makes the earlier cars maybe less desireable ergo less value in the secondary market. The value/worth of anything used is determined simply by what someone is willing to pay for it. That simple formula is the litmus test for value.

Don't know what he will be asking, but his prices are usually good and he is suppose to be getting 2 G Spyders in if he hasn't already. Try www.kipshewardmotorsports.com he sold my 328 last year and is really great to work with.

Just curious. Do new Gallardo's sell for less than sticker? (not spyders)...

Seems to me that the high end market is softening. May just be the supply of new cars, 430's, G's, now the 997 Turbo, etc etc. I've been looking for at new M5's lately, and the market is quite soft. Dealers are offering sellers in the $70's wholesale (outside california, anyway) and seller's with cars with sub 3k miles are still trying to get near sticker. The bid/ask spread is quite wide, which indicates a market headed downward.

No. New '06 G's are still going for sticker off the lot. The re-sale value on the G dropped mid-summer last year but came back quite strong this year so far once lambo started to make the spyder. The production numbers for ALL COUPE and SPYDERS did not go up in '06 as far as I know but I could be wrong. Whatever was made in '05 is being made in '06 with a certain percentage being spyders. Don't forget the limited edtion SE as well with only 250 made. I just saw a newly delivered spyder at lambo of scottsdale the other day with a production number of 3307. Thats how many G cars there are total for all model years. My '04 is worth more now than it was a year ago.

I like that the G's resale is low. I picked mine up for $140m with only 3200 miles. At $140m, the Gallardo (IMO) is the best exotic for the money!!!!

lambos depreciate quite a bit the first 12-18 months.....after that theyre pretty solid....same with every other car. In five yrs you will still be able to get 90-100k for the car if it doesnt have too many miles and is in good shape.

No way in 2011 will you get $90-$100.USD for an 04 or 05 Gallardo.

I watch that market too. Im not going to stand here and say im Roy Cats because i am DEFINATELY not, but I have been in the retail automobile business my whole life in various capacities. I know a thing or two about the markets.

What it boils down to, in my professional opinion, is supply and demand. Someone touched on Millionaire Next Door never buying a new car. Ive been telling friends and family that for years. Lease new:Buy used.

Go on ebay any given day of the week and you will see an abundance of G's out there. Some have been on the market for a long while. It's real simple; supply and demand.

Do you honestly believe that a Gallardo, in 6 years, will be worth more then a Diablo 6.0 in 6 years? In comparison, the G is a dime a dozen. Whats so rare about it?! Its not a Honda. Not everyone is in the market for one.

    My two drachmas:

    - Lambo overproduced and undermarketed the G in the first two years. It was a buyers market pure and simple.

    - MY06 coupe production severly limited due to Spyder production, so lower supply means more of an equilibrium between bid-ask.

    - MY06 (and I think MY05) base pricing were been stepped up in each year, which helps earlier MYs maintain value.

    - Spyders still getting premium pricing. MY06 coupes being sold for slight discounts (~10K is what I hear), but nowhere near the "giveaway" prices being offered earlier. Don't expect those days to ever come back.

    - The ONLY maker that still gets a premium for used cars is Ferrari, and that too only for its entry level model. For every other manufacturer, depreciation follows the standard curve: heavier in the earlier years, less steep later on.

    - MY04's and MY05's are a great value right now, especially MY04's. You can get MY04 good cars for $135 - $140K. I'd suspect $5 - $6K of depreciation / year going forward.

My guess is it'll be more like 10K/year for the first 10 years. Partly because the newer models will always be plentiful, just like Porsches, and partly because of the fear of owning an aging exotic.

It'll be much worse if it turns out that the V10 can't make it past 50-60K miles as some think...
