When did this come about?!? And What kind of name is Lagartijo? From AutoExpress.co.uk. --- There's no let-up at Lamborghini. Auto Express broke exclusive news of the Espada-inspired 2+2 in Issue 840, and we can now confirm more details - including the name. Our exclusive pictures in this week's issue prove the car will be called the Lagartijo. The move will disappoint enthusiasts who had hoped the evocative Espada badge would be reborn. Instead, the sleek four-seater will take its name from the fabled Spanish matador who spared the life of the courageous bull Murciélago. This is an appropriate choice; the creature has already given its name to the company's £162,000 coupé. There are obvious similarities with the legendary Sixties Espada, including two doors and pronounced overhangs. Other elements include the near-flat rear windscreen, which is tipped to hinge as a hatch, giving access to a sizeable boot. The newcomer features carbon fibre construction, keeping weight to a minimum. Power will be taken from the Murciélago's 6.2-litre V12, delivering 620bhp. Sales are expected to begin in 2009, with the car costing an estimated £180,000. Ferrari's current 2+2, the V12 Scaglietti, carries a £170,500 price tag. According to our sources, development of the GT means that a proposed SUV from Lamborghini - to be based on Audi's forthcoming Q7 - is now unlikely. I heard about it like 3three months ago on *************. I can't wait to see what the finshed product looks like. Sure hope lambo doesnt release just another SUV but if they do they should do something more aggressive like the Dodge SRT-10 Ram or like a Hummer H1. I want to see lambo make the fastest street legal production 4x4 in the world that could beat the Ram and that Porcshe chaynne Turbo.
A coupe? I would love if Lambo did a coupe, instead of a SUV. SUV market is getting very crowed, with Porsche, Jaguar will do one to challenge the Cayenne, the Range Rover, and Bentley's talk of a super-expensive one, I just don't see room. To me, Lambo is about fast and exotic sports cars. Yes, I know they have a short history with a SUV, but people see Lambo as an exotic sports car maker. Sexy, fast and expensive. I think a GT Coupe is excellent decision. Lambo needs to add a third line, yet maintain exclusivity, price tag, and the heart of the brand, and I think this fits the bill.
I really hope they don't go through with making an SUV. Wasn't the LM002 a big flop? They don't need it.
Yeah it was, but it wasn't built for road use at all, but it became after Lybia/KSA killed the orders.
Ha...just got the story in my inbox as well. Looks like it's a go then... I'm kinda excited about it. Always had this love for the Espada. Looking forward to it. Sounds like the Lagartijo is set to be a bad ass and hope it will carry a crazy Espada-like style.
Well, if pronounced the spanish way.. J have the "RHO" sound.. and not "ROW" american sound... a harsh "RRR" sound.. So it would be something like.. "La-gar-ti-rho" - Lagartijo.
The Saudi's bought most of them for desert patrols. They still uses them too. They were never intended for road use. The tires were designed for sand.
Yeah right. Libya should have purchased a bunch of them too, but the wasn't done. Also KSA didn't buy as much as expected.... Anyway, they were great cars, well in advance of their time in terms of prestige-fast-SUV (Who else has even today an engine with such a pedigree ?). They even built a proto with an offshore 7.2 ltr. engine. Waw. I tested one once (the regular), it's still a weird car. Correct as well for the tires, they're made for sand, you see it with the wall size and tread shape.
Indeed. And neither were Hummers, either. And those can hardly be called a "flop"... I'd bet that if the LM were out in an updated form right now, they'd be a huge hit. More exotic than a hummer, not as "soft" as a cayenne, and with a killer brand name. Not that I'm hoping it happens, but it'd work...
It looks good. Hope it looks like that when it comes out. I think a Lambo SUV would be cool. When Porsche announced they would build an SUV most everyone, especially the Porsche diehards, thought it was crazy and stupid. But now it's hugely succesful, accounting for about half of Porsche sales. I think this would probably happen with a Lambo SUV.
