So the french finally do it again. Now they are saying that they have proof that Lance was using an enhanced drug in 99. They say they have the technology today that can detect it, as for back then they did not. Gotta love the french....talk about sour grapes. Anything to do with the US of A they try and find a way to tarnish.
Lance of course denys any type of enhanced drugs.
I for one think he's innocent...I hope they dont try and take away what he rightly deserves.
    Thought?

But I would have used stonger language. probably something along the lines of F**K the French, little B***H made ass sore losers. Doesn't surprise me the French haven't been able to win at anything in the last, oh..........well chit. Have they ever won anything? Certainly not any conflict they ever entered unless you count when they were led by a height challenged Corsican some 220 or so years ago.

I dont think the rumors are true (and I really hope they arent). From the articles I've read about the issue, his accusers say that drugs were the only way he could have rebounded from cancer. I find it awful that someone would try to illegitimize his accomplishments. He was an amazing triathlete with potential to be a world class competitor in his teens, and was on his way to becoming a world class cyclist. His illness was just a setback that he was able to overcome.

Probably true. The trick is who can stay undetected and ahead of medical testing.

Wouldn't he still be on some sort of cancer drugs back in '99?

What do you expect? This guy gets cancer, survives and then lives on to win 7 times the most gruelsome bike tour in the world without taking anything???

Nowadays to finish the Tour de France you need to replete huge amounts of spent energy in your body. Food alone will not work... I guess all participants all take something and expect most of them to be quite close to the current detection limits. And I am not surprised at all when 6 years later new detection techniques reveal that in the past people were using forbidden stuff...

I guess he was loaded on steroids like a bull.

But, as a naive sportsman, maybe he believed that "THAT drink that made him go 40 % faster is just vitamins"....

    God knows.

    The French are asswholes.

They get more recognition (than ever) for their (now mortal) little bikerace and promptly shoot the guy who gave it that recognition in the back, immediately after he retires???

Lance should jusy laugh it off and spend his TALL vacation dollars in Italy!

I guess the incredible thing is to see the level of reaction....

In the end, who cares about him ?
And, what would happen if someone would talk like that about the states ?

Come on, relax a bit, calm down.

I personally have no problem with performance enhancing drugs in any way, shape, or form. Having studied them beforehand extensively, and then done a medically supervised "cycle" of Deca-Durabolin and Anavar (steroids) some 18 years ago when I was a competitive body builder.

There is so much more to winning at anything than taking a drug. It's just a very small part of the overall package and the only reason it's even an issue is because of the ill concieved and totally failed "war on drugs".........

    <Rant over.....>

As for the French......as I unequivically have absolutely positively nothing whatsoever good to say about the people, their government, their politics or their country......I won't.

I'm a huge cycling fan, huge Lance Armstrong fan, competed in triathlons and bike races myself, and was even on the same amateur team as Lance (although I was there 10 years later).

The cycling drug of choice isn't steroids, it is EPO that raises your red blood cell count. I guess it kinda super oxygenates your blood. The health risks are that it thickens your blood to the point of possible strokes and heart attacks. Anyway, back in 1999 they didn't have the technology to test for EPO. So they had an arbitrary limit that supposedly couldn't be obtained naturally. If you crossed the line, then "for your own safety" you weren't allowed to race. Not sure if repeat offenses would get you longer bans. If they actually found EPO on you, then you could get banned. Several cyclists from Columbia and other mountainous places claimed they could naturally cross those limits, but not sure if that was ever proven.

Now I think the technology exists that can test for EPO specifically and not an arbitrary red blood cell number. The attitude back in 90's was very much take EPO and/or sleep in an altitude tent to get your numbers as close to the cutoff as possible without going over. Several ex-employees and members of the team have strong claims and evidence Lance used EPO to get his red blood cells up. They had no reason to come forward, except I think Lances personality can be a little strong handed and he started getting a little forceful trying to make sure they wouldn't talk. So I think a few of them got ticked off when they got kicked off the team and then came forward with the info.

There are also questions in the technology to test, Tyler Hamilton is currently going through a long appeal process as he was blamed for blood doping, transfusing doped blood to get same red blood cell effects. Technology claims near impossible for this to be a mistake, but as they have gotten more scientists involved and over time the technology may not be as sound as thought.

I could ramble some more, but my opinion is simply that the majority of cyclists took EPO in the 90's, even Lance. As technology has improved, this has curtailed some of the use, but also scientists have gotten smarter at beating it. As with pro sports in America, usually the users are one step ahead of the testers. Only the dumb get caught! I wish all the sports were clean and I hope they are some day, but since this is their profession and you have to find every angle legal or not just to stay average, much less win. I still think Lances accomplishments were amazing and I think some of his recent wins were 100% clean. There is no proof yet that his first wins weren't 100% clean, I just have reasonable doubts.
