Yesterday I visited a museum with a Lancia B20 on display. I noticed something at the rear wheels that I'm unable to identify. I found a picture online:

It is the outer U-joint of the halfshaft. By moving the end of the halfshaft as far outboard as possible, they reduced the angles that the halfshaft has to move as the suspension goes up and down. This makes the halfshaft rotate in a smoother series of cycles as it turns. Constant velocity joints, today, have solved most of these problems. Lancia always had unique and well thought out engineering.

That car also has a transaxle and inboard rear brake drums, if I'm not mistaken, which allows that outboard rear CV joint to be moved as far out as possible.
