After years of searching and hesitation due to rarity and hard to find parts, etc. I gave in on temptation and purchased one of my dream cars. It's from another state so I'm hoping to have it in a few weeks. One thing I will need to do is re-install the A/C (needs compressor) and get it working again because it's frigging hot in Texas!

Very nice. Chad at the montehospital has everything you need for the car. I'm looking for one of the cromodoras with the "flat" outer lip with the 4x98 bolt pattern. Check out this beauty for sale:

I had a 76 back in the day.....I had it for a decadeand sold it in the late 80's. .(turbocharged)

Never did get that air conditioner to work worth a dam. Ripped it out and never bothered to put it back.

Your Red scorpion is very sharp and I bet a blast to drive.

    Best of luck.

Wow, great car. Quite the asking price ($24K). I cannot imagine that's the going price for one, even nicely restored like this one. I sold a '77 I had a few years ago, they were going for about $5k to $6k then. What's a fully restored and sorted one go for now a days?

Julian: Congrats on you car. They are great handling cars, I loved mine (had it circa 1985 to about 2000). The only drawback was that it was way underpowered and parts were a big pain in the rear to obtain. With ebay and the internet, the parts situation must be significantly improved. Enjoy it.

    Guys,

Thanks for the compliments! I agreed that they are underpowered and parts are a pain in the a#$ to obtain, but therre's something mysterious about the scorp that I could resist no longer. My other choice was a TR8 but between British and Italian.... well, you guys already know the answer :)

The Lofland car is without a doubt the best in the country. So value is difficult. I suggested to the owner, Allen, to take it to one of the big auction houses to gauge its worth. It should break new ground for these exotics when it sells.

Your new Scorp looks great. We are planning a Roamin' Chariots event to the Talihina, OK area to drive Hwy 1. I have contacted the Texas group to join us.

    Cheers

I like that car a lot, and would be willing to pay above existing market, but the asking price is just such a quantum leap higher that I just cannot justify it. One car sale does not a market make and thus I'm not sure you would ever be able to get out of it for anything like the asking price. The other concern for me is that I don't think that the car would pass California smog test. Even if it passed emissions, it does not seem to me like it will pass the visual test. (The '77 Scorpion I had would pass the emissions test, but failed the visual test because it did not have all of its smog equipment; this one might be in the same boat. On the other hand, that was in mid 1980's or so. Testing requirements have actually gotten more stringent. Until last year, I was thinking that I would be able to buy another one once the car turned 25 years, but the legislature eliminated that provision of the code and the cars will not be able to get out of testing here. Price you pay I guess to live in CA).

Great car! I remember my Dad owning one sometime in the late 70's. I here they are somewhat underpowered as well but how do they handle? Must be pretty light cars. I'd certainly like to drive one some day to see. Enjoy in good health!

They came underpowered because of US emissions and the late 70s fuel crisis. There are lots of go-fast parts available (Volumex superchargers were available for this engine or many have undergone turbo conversions) as the Fiat twincam was used for racing purposes all the way through the Lancia Delta Integrale era. Cams, dual carbs, high compression pistons, Ansa exhuasts, 2L block, electronic ignition, non-emissions tuning.....could double the factory US version horsepower remaining normally aspirated.

Handling is good but better if you swap in the european suspension springs. In race version the Montecarlo turbo Gr5 cars beat Porsche in the world championship a couple years running and the rally version, the 037, won the World Rally championship for a least a couple years. Konis were available for our streetcars and removing the overkill front brakebooster helped too.

They didn't come to the US lightweight. US bumpers, US headlights w/ motor, emissions devices galore, AC boat anchor from the factory that could blow the sweat off a gnat. Two of mine I lightened considerably removing the outright junk it didn't need and replacing what I could with lighter weight panels. My red car is ~500 lbs lighter than a stock Scorpion, my yellow one I sold was even lighter. Still, my fiberglass bodied early 1970s Saab Sonett weighed much less.

i got my usa 77 down to 2175. with fiberglass euro bumpers, deleted sound deadening, AC, smog and fixed front lamp conversion

had a2.0L 42dcnf, 42,82 cams, headers, adj pulley, euro piston, typical aquati, faza, bayless, pbs blah, blah, blah stuff they offered in the 70’s-80’s. estimate 130-140hp stiffer springs with koni's, no brake boosters.

took it out to the track a few times and out ran E36 M3, B18 integras, miata's, mustangs, etc...

fun car that i wished i kept but had too many cars already

it would have been easily to get it under 2000lbs and over 200hp with a modern N/A motor transplant of some sort for supercharged elise like performance.

you will need to do something about the brakes because the stock ones are terrifyingly poor...even without the boosters. Has anyone out there tried the tarox kits yet?

great little underrated car that got bad press from the lethargic USA spec version

hope you had fun with yours as i did with mine

Good info. Sounds like a car you can do a fair amount of tuning and weight trimming and have a real fun car!

No A/C but supposely all the components except for the compressor are there! But looks like my first problem is an oil leak that I think is coming from the oil pan gasket area :(
