Interesting. Thanks. I assume all those were pretty costly repairs?

nop...i bouhgt in new so i had it on warranty....only some minor things were paid by me..i sold it when the warranty expired...i did 100.000kms in 6.5 months :)

but i do have to say that despite all the headaches it gave,it was an amazing Jeep (when everithing worked) very very confortable,an amazing ride quality....and a proper offroader...

i like it very much...but i will never have another as a daily or second car...the eletronics are a problem inclusive on the newer models....

and yes the repairs are expensive in LandRovers....so beware if you decide to buy one...always check the maintenace book and if possible buy a warranty....

    Chris.

We had one for three years and about 35K miles.

Drank oil. Guzzled gas, maybe 10mpg around town. It also dirtied up the oil really quickly. I don't know what that's an indicator of, but it can't be good.

    Leaked fluids, ALL THE TIME.

Slow as molasses, for a car with a good sized V8, makes no HP, has no get up and go. NONE!!!

AWFUL TURNING RADIUS. You're gonna double take lots of turns.

    Drives like a truck.

Rattles and squeaks more than ANY CAR I ever owned.

    REPLACEMENT TIRES are VERY expensive.

Engine management stuff crapped out twice.

Dealer never had the right parts in stock, and still hadn't fixed the passenger seat, mirror or airbag light when we got rid of it.

Build quality was spotty. Seals cracked, seat broke, I could go on and on about that.

Nice leather, until you try to clean it. It's surface dyed, and a good cleaner is as likely to remove the color as it is the dirt.

Should I go ON? RUN FROM THIS CAR, RUN FOREST, RUN!!!

Only thing it did well was carry my extra large dog in comfort. THAT'S IT.

Oh and it had nice carpet and floor mats.

    Dave

Brother has one. He loves it - enough to overlook all the stupid ridiculous expensive problems it has. I hate the thing.

Creaky, and squeaky all the time

The windshield is "low" in relation to the seats, so while you have a great view of the road, if you are 6'2" or so, you are virtually looking out the blue sun tint just to see straight ahead. Always ducking your head to see if red lights have changed

Ridiculous electrical problems. Actually all kinds of problems. He got it new several years ago, put 100k miles on it. Had the entire exhaust go bad which was REAL expensive - something like $3,500 for the whole thing (it had rusted and needed front Y pipe, rear pipe, mid pipe). His rear differential croaked, around $2k. Had nothing but problems with the electrical system - as soon as you would find and fix one thing, something else would go wrong. Things like having a tail light out, but the fuse and the bulb are both OK. Finally you track down a short and fix it. Then you proudly start the car to discover your dash lights are out, or your washer fluid sprayer doesnt work, etc. Just stupid problems.

He was getting rust in the corner of the door jambs, a known problem and very expensive to fix.

Interior quality is spotty - trim pieces would spontaneously fall off without obvious means of re-attachment. Everything from the dealer was expensive, out of stock, with long lead times, etc.

Oh, and it was expensive to insure, got around 11mpg, had no "guts" - it was sorta quick off the line due to the gearing, but had nothing up top.

Bottom line - run, run, run like it's your ex-wife coming to ask for more money each month. Run for the hills. Dont look back, ever!

Man am I glad I drifted down to this thread. My reputation for my strong love of Range Rusters proceeds me. To be honest, I have never owned a Discovery but with the problems we had with our RR I would not recommend buying one. To make a very long story short, the number horror stories you hear ( differential failures, electrical problems) is minimal compared to what the actual number of occurrences is. No one ever says " Wow, I really love my rover. It is so reliable, good lucking, inexpensive to own and fun to drive". Most owners purchase them for the high price tag trying to impress their neighbors, and then are too embarassed to admit they have had so many problems with a truck that is ugly as he11 and rides like a Pacer with worn out shocks. There are too many other great trucks to pick a rr. To read my autobiography and tow truck tales search all my threads. I plan on publishing these memoirs one day. Clinton sold a million copies of his...

Just to be a contrarian, I’ll throw some support behind the beleaguered brand although mine is not Disco experience. I bought an LR3 about a year ago. I’m not a huge SUV fan and in large part don't “get” the SUV popularity but I needed something for crappy weather. I bought the LR3 because I liked a lot of the function, the dealer is close and not everybody has one.

I have had very few issues. Ride height sensors had to be calibrated and I needed a new gas cap. Fewer problems than my wife’s Lexus RX350. The LR3 is kind of growing on me still. I get 16.5MPG around town and while it’s mildly underpowered it blows down the road at 80MPH and I get about 19MPG. A really good transmission makes up for low power but again I don’t get the whole high HP SUV thing. Buy a sports car if you want to haul azz. To me the SUV is about functionality and this one is doing what I need. The square box thing is great for putting a lot of stuff in it and the farty air suspension actually works when you load it up.

At the end of the year experience, I’m not sure I wouldn’t buy a Range Rover if I had it to do over although the notion of spending $90K on one of these is really stupid.

I wouldn’t go near an earlier model but I actually like mine. I'd say so if I thought it sucked.

    Then I wrote it poorly.

I actually haven't had issues compared to other cars, the MPG isn't a disaster and the truck grows on me everyday. On the other hand, I'm anxious for the new Lexus to be out of the garage. The Lexus has had a radio go out, bad TPM sensors and a rattling roof rack replaced.

I thought the LR3 might be a disaster but didn't care for the reasons in the above post. It's turned out that if I had it to do over I might buy one of the stupidly prices Range Rovers.

I think my general lack of enthusiasm for SUV's came through in my first post.

I have a 2006 Range Rover Sport, it just turned 27,000 miles and has had 0 problems, and yes, I do love my Range Rover!

Everything works, no electrical issues at all and drives great. It is much better than my Mercedes, certainly better than my Hummer (GM JUNK).

JD Powers rates them the most improved vehicle for reliability in 2007.

Of course Ford now has the highest overall quality rating according to the latest JD Powers report, surpassing Toyota in 2007 so I think Ford's influence is showing.

I do not dispute past issues, but mine is the best new vehicle I have ever owned.

I have had two rovers, first a 4.6 HSE, and now the current big body BMW HSE. I loved both and both have been fairly reliable with only 1 or 2 problems in over 70k miles of driving. Now that it is out of warrenty though, it seems to have more and more 'issues' everyday. Hence, my warning.

Don't get me wrong.... I LOVE RRs, but not enough to jusify the crazy upkeep ex-warrenty. If you want to spend that kind of money on something, make it a fun sports car at least, IMHO.

What are you looking for in a truck, and what are you looking to spend?

I've driven several trucks that impressed me for various reasons, but if we know what you want in a truck we can probably suggest something.

I like the X5 for a fun to drive SUV. I like the Lexus hybrid for gas mileage and get-up-and-go. The new Cherokee is pretty comfortable and fun and is great offroad (although I am not an offroader). Some other options out there too, depending on what you lookin' fo'.

I dunno really. I'm just going over cars i might consider within the next year or two. We had a cherokee (V8) and its rather good. We had one before and i HATED it. The steering was crap, the ride was rubbish and i just didn't like it. The new one however is great. I love driving it too. Its pretty quick too (not a good thing for me, one of the reasons my parents hate me driving it) but i was amazed at the improvement from the previous one

Best bet would be a used Toyota Landcruiser/Lexus LX if you want all around performance (road/dirt/trail/rocks).

BMW X5s are the best handling/most car like.

    Lexus RXs drive very poorly.

I am actually considering getting a X5 to replace my Range Rover.
