I have a Discovery II that I would like to start taking off road at some point in the future. I believe that there are organized events that I would like to get involved in. I thought that a Forum devoted to Land Rovers would be a good place to start.

I had a Land Rover Discovery II years ago... One of the best cars I have ever owned...I will always regret selling her.

If you haven't taken her off roading yet, be prepared to be astonished. It is absolutely mind boggling what they are capable of bone stock.

The best year is the 2004 by far IMHO. With Ford's money most of the gremlins were eliminated by then and they brought back the locking differentials.

IIRC I had the SE?, which had the 16" rims which were better for off roading and the leatherette interior which was very easy to keep clean. Again, IIRC, the HSE was the top of the line then and it had 7 seat configuration, leather, etc.

The Discovery is a time warp vehicle. It has overbuilt solid axles, a pushrod Rover V8 that traces it lineage to the 1950s and a real 2 speed transfer case and locking differentials. All the buttons are oversized so they can be used with gloves on. It rides like a truck, gets horrid gas mileage, can't stop for S%it, and has rear doors designed for people under 5 feet tall.

HOWEVER, it has character for days and unlike most SUVS that would freeze up going over a speed bump, you can blast one of these up through the worst crap you can imagine and they just take it. Its legit.

If anyone is looking for a black 04 HSE disco with a frozen motor, let me know. Apparently they have oil starvation issues...

...I haven't heard that one, but I have heard of oil pump failures eating up engines. The biggest issue IIRC was leaking head gaskets and heads themselves that would fail over time...and by time I mean 60K miles! I never said they were reliable cars, but I have found that the best cars seldom are.

My own Land Rover SM pleaded with me to get out of the car when the warranty expired, which I reluctantly did. Looking back, I would have rather kept money aside to keep her on the road than to replace her with the sterile, lifeless unreliable slob of a car I did. Oh well, live and learn I suppose. :(

I have no idea, but I can't imagine an engine for a Disco would be terribly expensive given there are a billion of them out there. Problem is, a pristine low mileage '04 can be had for under 15K, so nobody really wants to throw money at one with issues.

I have a 2000 Discovery II, which I believe was the first year of the Discovery II model. At that point, the company was owned by BMW. The car was a bit of a disaster when it was new, went through tires and brakes every 15000 miles. I also had to replace the head gaskets twice along with front prop shaft twice, fuel line all the way back to the tank, hub sensor, rear adjustable suspension, the list goes on and on. With that said though, its an amazing truck to drive when it's set up properly and running well! Since its no longer a daily driver, the issues have subsided tremendously. Thanks for the Forum suggestion.

Still enjoying our '95 Disco S1; bought new in '94. 215xxx miles; original motor/trans/transfer case, never opened (I think all the oil & fluid leaks have 'preserved' the mechanicals). Lots of pricey Michelins and some brake rotors...rear sunroof failed about 6-8 years ago, A/C still fine; crap Alpine stereo never any good......
Now semi-retired to the island, still a DD....
I could complain about poor gas mileage, avg. 14mpg even at 45mph.....

One of the best vehicles I've ever owned (40+).

BTW: traded a '94 Suburban with 28K and noisy main bearings for the Disco ("we need a new car - today!")
