Have a lap of Daytona! Video is from this weekends test days in Grand-Am Cup running a 996 Porsche Carrera. Getting the video compression low enough to download quickly has left a less than quality video but still fun...

You have no idea how much I enjoyed that. I will watch that for some time to prepare for my own race in April.
How did you guys do? Fastest lap?

We did well in the 88 car with a 2:03 but had trouble with the 89 car and overheating. Got that worked out though, unfortunately it was all done 10min after the last session was over.

We are looking forward to the race.

Hi Martin! It was great to meet you over the weekend! Dwain got down to a 2:04 on Thursday, 5th on the grid, and then worked with Steve the rest of the days to get him up to speed. Dwain is good for a 2:03 on new tires and we got Steve down to a 2:05 which should be a decent race pace. This was not our car we plan to run as the primary car is still being built. We bought this car to use for the test days and took posession of this car in the staging lot at the track on Wednesday when we met. The setup was too soft and the ride height was too high but it was comfortable to drive with lots of grip. We had a good time and had no other issues. See you in a couple of weeks!

    Joe,

Sorry I didn't get a chance to introduce myself to you this past weekend. Mario from AIM spent some time assisting in technical support with us and was really helpful and professional. Out of curiosity, what program or how did you put the "dash" display on the video? Is that something through AIM? I think that would be a great instrument for driver coaching...being able to see the braking, turn-in, RPM, MPH, and throttle position. We set the fast lap with one of our ST cars on Sat. practice...so we were pleased. I look forward to meeting you in a few weeks.

Now that is funny. I passed by your truck several times, our rig was parked two down from you, next to BRG motorsports. In your group picture is Sebastian, who found a job with you guys this weekend. He is working for a friend of mine who ran the JMB Racing program in Rolex. Sebastian was one of their crew then.
So funny how small the world is.

    Hi NRG,
Yes, Mario and I are the field support team for AIM. I have been with them several years now and work for them as outside sales. I worked for MoTeC for 12 years and left to start my own business and am the leading AIM sales representative now. I am running the #03 Porsche this year in GAC and Mario and Chad came out as the customer base is growing like wildfire. The system I use for our Porsche and many others in our series is the AIM DaVid video system. Since you already have the AIM MXL, you need to add the DaVid slave expansion component. This brings all your data from the MXL and uses the CAN bus to transmit to it. There are 2 video inputs and data all time synced and sent out as 1 video out. A very useful tool for drivers. You can always use it to watch how your seat covers are treating your cars. ;) Let me or Mario know if you are interested in the video systems, they are US $1799.00 and 2 cameras are US $199.00 each. See you in 16 days! BTW, your cars look great!

  8. Martin, it is a small world indeed. I know Alain very well from JMB. Actually, a couple of guys that work for my team assist with him and his Ferrari's from time to time. I've had my crew chief transport cars and provide additional support at some of his events. I met Sebastian about a year ago at a Ferrari event. I must admit, he is a GREAT worker and an asset to any team.

Joe, we may be interested in adding the DaVid system at some point in the future as I can see the benefits to running this system. We'll talk. Nick

Nice video. 2:05s is pretty quick. We were doing 2:00 - 1:59s in 89, the last year that I ran there. Brought back more than a few memories. Last lap I fell down in the left hander after the horseshoe. Didn't break anything though.

    ROAR !!!

I was wearing my ROAR hat today -- all the way up in Winston Salem. I'm anxious to hear how the cars performed. Did Rob keep the shiny side facing up?

NRGMotorsports -- were you the one who came by my house to borrow the oh-so-cool AIM device a few weeks ago with Rob? Damn... this is a small world.

    -Daniel

  11. Daniel, we were the ones who came by your house to borrow the AIM timer for one of our other cars that didn't have the AIM data system on the car. We had a few mechanical gremlins but we were able to overcome most of the issues to set the fastest lap during the last round of practice for the weekend on Saturday afternoon! The cars looked great, ran great, and everyone had a wonderful time.

So you have your hat, but do you have the Polo, the T-shirt, The Fleece, or most likely to come later, the ROAR Racing underwear?

    hehehe

And of course the underwear will not only be flame retardent, but also liquid and stain proof for us older drivers that need the extra protection while on the track at those speeds. I did not turn any lap times as fast as any previously mentioned, but I did improve each time out and had a blast doing it.

Great video Joe! I was impressed with your set up and I am sure Nick will be in touch for the ROAR racing cars. Can the video quality be improved with different cameras or are they specific to your system?

    Hi Rob,
the video is less than quality because of the compression I did to get it up on the net. The video is very clear on the mini dv tape I record to. It is meant to be played back on the TV/monitor in your coach or transporter at the track or really any TV/monitor in any location. Here is a better video I provided with a lap of Road America using the second camera as a foot cam...
http://www.aimsports.com/video/policastro2.mov It is in QuickTime format and has better video quality. Enjoy...

You mean you're finally going to throw out those nastyass Depends you've been using?

Here's some in-car video of Rob in his RX8 at Daytona during practice for the GrandAm 200. I agreed to host a clip for him. You looked good out there, Rob!

    Enjoy!

Thanks, the video actually makes it look like I might know what I am doing. I have a few demons to get under control (like turn #1) to drop the excess time. I had a blast as well and can't wait for the race at the end of the month.

The other video at Road America is the coolest thing I have ever seen, except for a bunch of Ferrari's all lined up. But your were right, the video quality is substantially better. I was hoping that the cameras I already have would be able to be used but if not, oh well. I will talk to Nick.

Jody, thanks for hosting the video.

I just wish someone would atleast once just point one of the extra cameras straight BACK so we can watch the other cars eat the guys dust all the way, or watch another car behind him and see what he is doing to try and get around the guy...

But that porsche video was pretty sweet. I hadn't actually ever seen a video that explicitly shows what is involved with heel/toeing. Some guy had explained it to me as having, say, the left half of your foot on the brake, with the right half on the gas pedal, which never made any sense to me, because what happens when your foot slips off the brake pedal?, you were gonna give the car a nice burst of gas... probably right into a wall or the back of another car...

Hi Robert, I do point the camera out the back for the race. In practice, I like to see what the drivers do as you can see in the videos. Heel and toe in the RA video, and drivers head movement to see where they are looking, hand movements on the shifter to see if they are too aggressive on the shifter linkage, and steering movements to make sure we don't have any sawing action. View out the back makes for great video during the race as we don't need any more DE, we are racing now! I have been able to verify "love taps" and make a case with officials before using this view. There are many benefits for video, if you look closely on the RA video, you can see the sponsor logo in the lower right of the data screen. This got the team muy dinero from their sponsor as long as this logo was present... ;)

Robert, I thought the same thing when I was at VIR with the Mazda group last spring so i turned my camera around for one session and took some video. Here are a couple of clips:

    VIR back stretch backwards

    VIR Uphill esses backwards

VIR front stretch backwards with a T1 Z06 Corvette hard on my ass

Jody, Great videos! I hope that the camera you used has the anti-jerking feature enabled or your camera mounting point is moving around several inches as you can see by looking at the rear glass stamp. I have run an additional camera on suspension movements to cure some handling issues before. Any video is a great tool!

Thanks. I use the I/O Port mount which has that silicone disc that dampens shock, but it tends to slew the camera a little when it's under G loading.

I tried the backwards shots once but without a forward camera synched up with it, it loses context. I'm thinking about getting the "Helmet Cam." It's a bullet cam that can be mounted about anywhere.

Hehe. That is pretty cool. Luckily I know VIR pretty well so atleast I know whats coming up next... hehehe. I having a camera pointing both forward and back in the race would be pretty sweet when it is synced up.

    Thanks Jody!
