    My girlfriend just spilled coffee on her laptop, all over the keyboard(alot)----Computer was on and immediately shut down. We blow all the coffee out of it with compressed air and took the battery off. Set it by a fan for a few hours to dry out. Still will not turn back on---Is she pretty much screwed? Don't really care about the laptop, we can get a new one. More concerned with her pics, vids and documents she had on it. And yes, she has been told a 100 times to back stuff up to an external hard drive, but let's just say she is hardheaded sometimes and procrastinates....

    Most likely it's done for. Just pull out the hard drive (usually under a little door in
    the bottom) and go to Best Buy or other computer store and buy a USB hard drive
    case made for that size HD and she can copy over all the stuff she wants from there.

    I would doubt the spill affected the HD - they're pretty well sealed, and on the BOTTOM
    of the motherboard, so likely didn't get touched by fluid anyway.

    don't know if it would work on a laptop. but a friend dropped his blackberry in water once. Placed it in a zip-lock bag with rice in it. let it sit for a few days, and it worked again. don't know if it'd work on a laptop, but it couldn't hurt to try. just take the battery out first, and probably the hard drive too
