I'm surprised 18 months isn't still within the warranty.. where did you purchase it? Or was it used when you bought it?

When trying to turn it on, was it also plugged into the wall to receive power in case the battery was dead? Have you popped the battery out plugged in the A/C adapter and tried it then?

If it still won't come on, you have a bad battery, power supply, both... bad power converter on the motherboard, bad motherboard, or it simply doesn't like you.

    Good luck! :)

Thanks mate. I'm pretty sure it's a bad powersupply. I had the thing field stripped and reassembled tonight but no luck. Warantee is only 12 mos. and Dell support is AWFUL! India call center is one thing, but their people are id10ts.

    Lucas.

She may not like me. She's been on for 18 mos. straight. :)

a ball peen hammer is good and if it's serious try a jack hammer, if all else fails use mum's wok and get some shavings of rust (iron oxide) and aluminium sticks and heat till it all melts together, once its turned into a blob let it cool, then place the substance ontop of the laptop and place a strip of magnesium ribbon underneath it. Now comes the repair part, carefully light the magnesium ribbon and watch it heat the iron shaving/aluminium blob and once heated it will sink thru the laptop and thru the desk and floor and anything else till it cools down.
Another great example of a thermodynamically spontaneous reaction is the thermite reaction. Here, iron oxide (Fe2O3 = rust) and aluminum metal powder undergo a redox (reduction-oxidation) reaction to form iron metal and aluminum oxide (Al2O3 = alumina):

    Fe2O3(s) + 2 Al(s) Al2O3(s) + 2 Fe(l)

Hi this is tech support. Please verify your identity, your laptop's serial number. Thank you. Now, you say it won't turn on? Ok, before we do anything, make sure your data is backed up. What's that? You can't power up to access your data? Oh, well, just use the battery power then. It still won't power on? You mean the power button doesn't work? Well, then, just write your data down by hand--all 18 GB of it. Oh, it's already turned off? Simply plug it in, let the battery charge, and then turn it on. Oh right, it still won't power on? OK please hold while I get my supervisor: he will just verify your identity and your computer's secret BIOS code, which you get by powering it on and holding Ctl-F2! And while you are waiting, would you mind pressing *, then option 2, then 4? It will take you to a quality control survey.

Try requesting a supervisor and then their supervisor. There are diff. tiers of services reps. The first tiers are a pain to deal with I usually have my assistant deal with it until we get passed it. But, after the ridiculous phone questions, the tech they send out fixes the problem. So, in the end, all is good.

*LOL* I'm sorry... but that sounds very much like what i'm going through with my own laptop right now :D:D:D
    1. I had it sent in to be repaired
    2. came back without the charger ( Iasked them to send it to me immidiately)
    3. One week later they send me a charger... but no cables..(again i phoned them and asked them to send the cable NOW)
    4. Today, another week later, the eeeh cable arrived.. but it wasn't a power supply cable... but a cable for sound inside a stationary pc!!!! HUH????

And it all started because my pc crashed constantly with an error and blue screen... And because it would not charge the battery anymore. So no power. And when i got back my pc they just wrote a note: We can't find the error. (when the pc arrived at them, there was NO more power on the battery)
But before i sent it to repair i have marked all screws and marked the battery and the pc with my name.... nothing was touched.
All my data is still there... so they didn't even bother to try to reinstall the pc !??!!!

Ow and then they wan't to do a telephone support.... with eeh no power on the pc and a charger without power cable... and eeeh with a battery that wont work!!!! What is happening? :D

Sooo eeeh good luck!!!! I'm still fighting!!!
BTW.. this was at Hewlett Packard !!!

Just an observation, but have you tried starting the laptop while holding it upside down? Just a fairly common remedy for Dell laptops from back when I was an MIS manager :)

It's a Dell Inspiron 1100. Not a ton of horsepower but as an IT Consulatnat it is everthing to me. It's like being a mechanic and haveing your shop burn down. Not good. I haven't tried Dell Back, but I did go to The Geek Squad and they wanted $300 + Parts. For that I could buy a new (used) one on Ebay. I'm looking into these firms:

Mrs_Bugattiart: did you use one of these guys?

    Thanks!!!

You'd be better off getting a new machine vs. those guys. Do you have the data backed up?

If its any consolation there have been lots of nice advances in laptop technology in the last 18 months that'd make it worth it.

Vs. The Geek Squad or Laptop repair shops in general? Seems like HUGE wase to throw out a lap top every 18 mos.

Nope. But I imagine devices exist that let you asscess the laptop drives via USB. I have several such devices for my old IDE drives.

    Name 2?

there are some devices to hook up a notebook drive and transfer data via usb.

    however...

let's go back to the original problem. what is going on? power supply? what turns on, or doesn't work, etc.?

Dunno, I imagine it is the power supply. The machine been's acting fine. Surfed some porn Thursday night, sut the lid, went to bed, work up, went to office, no juice. New battery too. Tried everyhing. Even took it all apart and "nut n' bolted" it last night. Nuthin'

I don't mind spending $200, maybe $300, to get her fixed, but any more and I might as well buy a new one. Fcuking Dell...

so if you use A/C power, pull the battery, pull any USB devices from it, and where you get a green light on the A/C power... you hit the power button and what happens?

The processors are much more efficent energywise. The 725 I have is very thermally efficent. The machine never seems to get hot. The screens are much nicer and brigther and many have widescreens. I have a hp dv1000 that I just got and it is a stellar little device. 5lbs with internal dvd-r.
Holds 2 gigs of ram too. Internal bluetooth and wireless G as well.

Chemusa.com imports most of the same units that Dell resells. I have not worked with them in years but they use to stock most parts.

    Hi Lucas... no i didn't :)
I know the error is a harddisk error... so it needs to be replaced.
And since the laptop is less than one year old... they have to replace it !! :)
But they act stupid and do nothing !!!

I'll try, but I don't want to mislead them as to what the problem might be. I didn't short out the machine, if you know what I mean....

    ----------
    Problem: Bad Power Supply

Solution: Replaced power supply unit and installed "Man Shield" coating to chassis.
