Most likely its the video card or the ribbon tape attachment that the monitor uses u can try to undo it and then reset the ribbon and it may work fine and also remove and re-install the video driver card... Laptops wiggle allot and things just come loose and they sometimes just need to be reset...

What kind of computer? Is it an Acer?

My HP screen is actually separating itself from the backing. I guess the pressure was too much that it just broke the screws. I can't even close it straight anymore. It's really hard to move around too. It's actually being supported in the back by a jar of peanut butter, that if I move it, it just falls back.

either the video card is dying/dead or the cable between the display & the motherboard has frayed causing a defective connection ...

many laptops have a connector for an external monitor ... plug it to one ... if it works, it's not your video card ... but the bad news is that the screen is dying or dead. that's not good. cheaper to buy a new laptop.

if external monitor also has display issues, then it's probably the video card. you'll need to take it in for repairs anyway.

+1 I have a Toshiba that took a good bump and the back light for the screen went out. It works great with an external monitor but but barely visible on the standard screen:(
