I just had my 4th Dell laptop crap out on me and am wondering what you guys that know about laptops can recomend for me. I keep buying dells because I get the damn catalogs every month and they make it so easy to order them. Now after my latest one needs the hard drive replaced and it has been taking me 5 min to boot up and connect online for the past 6 months I am looking to change brands. What I need in a laptop is at least a 15 inch screen, something that has a long range wireless modem(mine wouldn't even work throughout the house) a dvd burner and something that boots up quickly. I pretty much only use MS office programs (no gaming) download photos and songs and internet. What do you guys think?

    Thanks,

    Jeff

Now that you can install Windows on them, there is absolutely no reason not to buy a Mac. None whatsoever.

If for some reason you don't want an Apple, get an IBM Thinkpad. Everything else on the market is crap.

    Jeff,

What are you doing to your Dells? I wonder why you are having such problems... I've had some issues but they have taken care of them quick.

That's awesome, I just posted a few days ago and a similar thread pops up.

Just read the thread linked above and it'll help you out. I still haven't decided, but just doing my homework on it.

Nothing, this was over a period of 5 or 6 years. After a while they seem to slow way down and two of them had failed hard drives. And I stay away from the porn sites and have good security. I guess I just got a few lemons.

I read it, thanks. I didn't search before I posted. Like others say I guess you can get a bad one with any brand so I guess as long as it is specked out like you want it, it doesn't really matter what brand. The one thing that is good about dell has been the tech support.

I'm very pleased with my Acer 5100. It's also Windows Vista Premium Ready. Also have a Mac and at the time of purchase many years ago, it was intended mainly for graphics programs.

The reason I ask is to help. You know Dell doesn't make hard drives and uses pretty generic laptop drives. They will replace them under warranty. I had one I thought was going bad (sounded loud when the head dropped) and they sent me a new one the next day.

Also, if it's getting slow over time it's prob. not the machine. Just some software issue. I think you might see these issues with other brands, but not sure you will get the service.

Take a look at the Fujitsu Lifebook Tablet laptops. I bought a new T4210 last week and not only is it extremely lightweight, its a LOT of fun to use!
