I am asking here in this region because the stores are generally the same. Don't know much about them--Seriously considering buying one soon. Any recommendations?? Probably be used to surf the net, watch video clips, media related stuff. Just bought a Dell desktop for downstairs in my home, should I stick with Dell for the laptop also? Looking for a laptop I can use upstairs while I watch TV...Don't want to spend more than 2k or so...

Dell Inspiron is what I've used for some time. Currently have a 9300.

Just make sure you get a laptop with a separate video card, and a ****load of memory.

Only thing I don't like about the 9300 is it has a very large overall footprint. I might go a little smaller next time.

Or you can commit PC suicide and go with a mac. UGH!! I hate those things, and being in the printing biz, I tangle with them all the time. They just plain SUCK.

My personal HP runs circles around the work Dell -- but that's probably the difference in XP images: I've shut down all the background junk on the personal HP, but the Dell has XP as configured by the IT department.

I'm fond of HP (formerly Compaq) business class notebooks, but they're none too cheap.

You can get any number of comparisons on the web. Google for "notebook comparison".

But in this area, consider mail-order. For some reason, every time I've looked at a new desktop computer, the local stores "just happen" to be out of any model that looks like a good deal.

(I've seen this on all sorts of products from computers to coffee-makers: I'll see something on sale on a national web page, only to have the local store tell me that they haven't carried that model for years.)

I have a dell laptop (Inspiron 700M), I might had gotten a really good deal but I got what I paid for. After the 3rd month, factory battery burned and it wasn't one of those recall ones to make it worse. It's crappy quality, everything is the lowest quality which allows dell to sell more and such crazy prices. It's a great computer for college students who buy it at freshmen year and throw it away by junior year. Some of my problems as a second year include,(Burned dots on screen, almost non working Wireless, horrible battery life, HEATS UP LIKE A MOFO]

I just went to Tyson's corner Sony Store to check out some laptops, and you just envy those machines. They are extremely great, same prices but you know it's backed by an amazing name Sony. Most of them very small and they have a very fine finance option ( 0% 12 months). Check them out, if sony doesn't work out for you don't go Below HP. Don't think about Dell.

Last summer I bought the Toshiba Satelite laptop that im using now.
    Intel Dual Core 2.0g processor
    100 gig memory
    1 gig of RAM
    128mb ATI video card
    built in harman kardon speakers
15.4 inch widecsreen high res lcd
    thumbprint reader
    dvd burner
and a bunch of other stuff.

I read dell's inspirion build quality is horrible, actually my girlfriend has one and I can attest to that.

I did a bunch of research at the time and it seems Toshiba has a good name when it comes to laptops. I paid around 1800 for mine, bu im sure now you can get even better specs for the same price as the one I have now.

    http://www.toshibadirect.com/td/b2c/ebtext.to?page=segHHO

You can go to there website and customer build your computer just like dell. Just be aware due to build time of custom laptops plus shipping you are looking at 2-4 week wait time until you receive it.

It's only good for teenagers who want to start learning it. For us oldies, it's just too much hassle learning a new OS and trying to find all the alternatives ways of finding softwares that work with Mac and the substitutes and so on and so forth. If my Windows gets f'ked I can fix it, but if a mac goes wrong, I wouldn't know where to even start.

    Windows = Easy to use.

The only good thing about it is the fact that's small and weights like a small note book. Everything else is so ****ty. But you can't beat paying $900 dollars for almost the same specs that you have for $1800 you know.

We have dell inspiron laptops all over at home, work and for one of my college kids. My sales guys have 'em, too.

Other than the battery recall, I've never had ANY PROBLEMS with them. No build quality issues, no crashes that can be attributed to hardware (can't say the same for Microsoft's part of the deal) and overall they've been extremely reliable.

Been using dell for laptops/notebooks for 10 years without a problem.

    Robbie-

Making grand statements like "will not do Apple" are as myopic as stating "will not do Ferrari." Why turn your back on a wonderful solution?

I've been using Macs since 1988, through the public realization of the Internet, until today. I use the Mac for a variety of tasks from web design, graphic design, video editing, image editing, surfing the web, handling emails to word processing, spreadsheets, databases and everything else to keep my company running. When it comes to "business related" tasks, like MS Office stuff, the Mac versions are completely compatible with the Wintel versions.

The only thing I don't use a Mac for is business accounting which we run on WinXP using QuickBooksPro2000.

However, this is going to change.

If you're really into the Windoze thing then Mac is still a stellar choice because of its' current hardware structure. The new Intel processors allows Macs the ability to run WinXP/Vista simultaneously with OSX.

    But why is this significant?

Mainly because it allows you the best of both worlds. For particular applications that are Windows-specific, you can continue using them without any problems on the new Macs - and use them exactly as you would if it were a "Dell."

But the greater magic is that you take all the non-Windows-Specific stuff to the Mac side - activities that typically leave you and your machine vulnerable, such as: web surfing and e-mail. Remember how long it takes for your Wintel machine to start up due to spyware, malware and other warez hidden in your machine? No longer. All those problems of attacks, viruses and corruption from surfing and opening emails are no longer problems.

Whoosh - gone in a magical moment. Like a 355 roaring off into the sunset.

On top of all that, using the Mac allows you access to easy to use software to manipulate images (like superimposing a 355 on top of that 996) or create videos (like that of the 355 cruising around town with a bevy of Hooter's girls for the chagrin of FC members).

So, don't readily dismiss the Mac. There's lots of possibilities and opportunities if you take a closer look.

    Robbie,

Using a mac is like pulling the trigger on a gun, no skill and no brains, just click and shoot!!
They are soooooo easy, come out of the cave and don't be afraid(note of sarcasm!).

There is nothing to learn. They have little pictures of the different programs, you click it and starts working!! Look, if I can do it, anybody can do it!

All these name brands are great, but if you want bang for your buck. Look at Lenovo, Acer and Asus. Just so you guys know, Acer makes the Ferrari laptop and Asus makes the Lamborghini laptop, but those models are overpriced and break alot, just like the cars. I have an acer travelmate 8200 right now.
    2 gigs of SDD RAM
    120GB hard drive
    Intel Core Duo processor 2ghz
ATI Radeon X1600 graphics card with 512mb video memory
    widescreen
comes with a bluetooth VoIP phone (works amazing)
Not to mention its made of carbon fiber
    Cost: 1800.

Asus G1 is also like mine, same idea and little better specs, same price. Check them out, I promise you it is worth it.

I use both also! Mac G4 cube! It's good to be diverse with the technology. I have several Dell laptops and a scratch built desktop I put together a year ago. I've heard the Acers are problematic.
